Rogers Center seeks full-time executive director

SHERBURNE – Nearly two years after taking charge of Rogers Environmental Center in Sherburne, the Friends of Rogers not for profit group is seeking an executive director for the first time to move the organization forward.
Responsibilities of the executive director will be to oversee operations and finances of the center. Hopes of the organization are to become more active in grant applications, fundraising and tracking the available budget, said Friends of Rogers Board President Sharon Pelosi. The board will be advertising for the position nationally in the coming weeks.
“We feel like we’re in a transition process now,” said Pelosi, explaining that the organization is ready to take “the next step forward.” “We’re growing as an organization and we’re excited about it.”
Friends of Rogers, once funded by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, has been a landmark in Chenango County for more tha 45 years; but state funding cuts forced the DEC to cease funding to the education center at the end of 2010, despite opposition from locals who supported the center.
Since then, the Friends of Rogers group, comprised mostly of volunteers, have been at the helm of the center, relying on private funding and available grants to keep the doors open. After its official inception as a not for profit agency in April of 2011, Friends of Rogers has kept one paid position to oversee center operations and major annual events including its popular Earth Day and Winter Living celebrations. Rogers Coordinator Cara Sefchick currently holds that position.
“They would like the executive director to get a better handle on the bigger picture and on regular fundraisers,” Sefchick said. “It’s essentially a higher skill level than what I’m qualified for.”
Subsequent to the hiring of an executive director, Pelosi said the organization will consider a restructuring of its staff, and are even now pondering the likelihood of keeping more than one paid position, but it’s up in the air. “We feel like we’ve reached a point of stability,” said Pelosi. “Right now, we’re taking a look at the overall staffing structure and putting our resources into an executive director.”
The center is also able to keep one educator who is funded through federal grants, Pelosi noted. Seasonal interns are made available with funding from the NYSDEC. One of the goals of the organization is to acquire similar funding opportunities in the future, she added. “We’re looking for someone who can come in with management experience and experience in a not-for-profit world.”
The Friends of Rogers aim to have the executive director position filled after the 35th annual Winter Living Celebration on Saturday, Jan. 26.
