New Berlin lights it up Saturday
NEW BERLIN – The Village of New Berlin will hold its first-ever “official” Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday from the corner of State Route 80 and Main Street in the center of the village. Coinciding with Saturday night’s kick-off to the holiday season (albeit a bit earlier) will be a 2 p.m. grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at the nearby Redner’s Corner Market and Deli, which officially opened for business Nov. 12.
Said New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter of the tree lighting, “We have a phenomenal committee that has put this together and I’d like to commend Kiran Borst for her vision and effort in making this a reality.”
The ceremony is also a fundraiser of sorts, added Potter, with any and all monetary donations acquired throughout the evening benefitting the Unadilla Valley Central School’s after prom party.
First and foremost, however, the event is an opportunity for the entire community to come together for a holiday celebration, one the village hopes to repeat on a yearly basis.
“We’d really like to thank all of our local businesses that have helped support this,” said Potter of the event. “They’ve gone above and beyond our expectations.”
The newly-minted Redner’s Corner Market and Deli – formerly known as Marquit’s Supermarket – is just one of those businesses. On Saturday, Redner’s will have hot chocolate and chili for sale for those needing a break from the cold, and new owner Gretchen Redner said she’s simply glad to be part of such a supportive and generous community.
“Business has been amazing,” she added. “The support has been amazing and we’ve received a lot of shocked looks when people come through the door and see the changes we’ve made to the store.”
As a way of saying thanks, Redner’s will offer a number of specials throughout the day and the following week, including Saturday’s offering of chili and hot chocolate.
“Everybody has had such a wonderful response,” said Redner of the market’s new eat-in area. “We’re starting to gather some regular customers who are taking advantage of it and again, we truly appreciate the outpouring of support. People have sent us flowers and are stopping in just to say hi and I just want to thank everyone for that.”
The Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony will also feature holiday music and additional refreshments such as coffee, hot cocoa and cookies. For more information visit the Village of New Berlin’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/NewBerlinNY.
