Oxford gets in the holiday spirit

OXFORD – The start of the holiday season was marked with this year’s annual “Holiday Tree Lighting on the Park,” held Nov. 25. The weather was brisk and a few flakes swirled in the air. The park filled with a large gathering for the inspiring choir, music by the Oxford United Praise Band, Santa, cookies and smiles everywhere.
The honorable Oxford Village Mayor, Terry Stark, donned his formal top hat, welcomed everyone for coming out and gave a special thank you to emcee Jim Baldwin and the Oxford Lions Club for providing the gingerbread cottage-sound system that was being used.
The Oxford Academy High School chorus student volunteers lead a sing-along of traditional Christmas carols. There was a pause for the announcement of the primary school winners of the Recycled Holiday Ornament Contest by Mayor Stark, followed by more singing.
There was a special ceremony for the grand illumination of the LaFayette Park Christmas tree. Two lucky “honorary tree lighters” were selected from the crowd to become part of the program. The primary school children, David and Evelyn Emerson, came up on the band stand and emcee Jim Baldwin got everyone to join in the countdown, “…five, four, three, two, one.” David and Evelyn threw a special red and green switch, and the tree sparkled with lights! The crowd cheered heartily and sang, “O Christmas Tree.”
Another special treat was the performance of a musical number sang by the Oxford Civic Theatre cast from the upcoming play, “The Last Doll Christmas Musical,” under the direction of Gail Murphy. The play will be performed in its entirety on Dec. 7 and 8, at 7 p.m., at the Oxford High School auditorium.
The Holiday Committee’s festive display of twinkling lights created a magical backdrop for the jolly man in the red suit, Santa Claus. Santa made his grand entrance by arriving in a red convertible coming from the new Main Street Bridge as everyone was singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” He had a big black sack filled with candy canes to give to every child. Children waited on line to see Santa and he patiently listened to every wish.
The wonderful sights, sounds and tastes of holiday good-cheer were everywhere and were enjoyed by so many. Elyse Mickalonis, videographer from YNN-TV, recorded the event for the evening news, and award-winning recording artist Joe Crookston stayed to enjoy the celebration after his concert in 6 On The Square.
Jan Davis, Carol Lang, and other members of the Holiday Decorating Committee served rich hot chocolate provided and prepared by Joanie Bradley and Charlie McMullen, and Steve and Sherry Behe made and served their famous hot mulled cider. Members of the Oxford Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, and the Oxford Grange #894 delivered hundreds of home-baked cookies.
It all seemed like an effortless extravaganza due to all who shared in the preparations. Thanks from the Oxford Holiday Committee, go out to the many hands of the community that joined in the effort that made this a spirited, joyous event.
