Garden Club members decorate Oxford Memorial Library for the holidays
OXFORD – Tuesday afternoon marked the advent of a tradition dating back to the early 2000s. The Oxford Memorial Library stood poised as members of the Garden Club fussed about the interior and exterior of the historic building, hanging elaborate hand-crafted Christmas ornamentations. The annual library decoration bonanza is one facet of the Garden Club’s broader scheme to beautify Oxford.
“We try to decorate the library using a different theme each year,” said Garden Club president and Oxford beautifying co-conspirator Jeanne Cline. Last year, the club decorated the library using an angel theme. Tuesday though, the club chose The Polar Express as their inspiration.
“We plant a garden during the year around the fountain in Lafayette Park and another one in Washington Park,” said Cline. The club also maintains a garden outside the library.
“We also buy Christmas gifts for the Bida Home residents and call the garden we plant across the street in Washington Park, the Bida Garden,” said club member Donna Schindler. “Our group is all about community service and beautification,” she admitted.
The Oxford Garden Club boasts a roster of a reported 19 members and is part of a larger national organization. “Being a part of a larger organization opens up opportunities for our members,” said Schindler. One of the opportunities open to members is a chance to attend school and take special gardening or landscaping classes.
“We are always looking for new members and we provide all sorts of opportunities to expand gardening knowledge,” said Schindler. At least three club members have recently taken gardening classes at esteemed institutes such as Cornell University in Ithaca.
