SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville pulled away from Unadilla Valley in the last three minutes to repeat as S-E Tip-off Tournament champions Saturday night.
Jordan Van Althuis hit two free throws to raise S-E’s lead to five points, and freshman Savannah Irwin made it a seven-point advantage with a steal and layup at the two-minute mark. Van Althuis had 18 points and six rebounds, Irwin scored 13, and fellow S-E freshman Lily Berg added 11 points.
UV seniors Jordan Anderson and Amanda Off scored 19 points apiece, and the duo accounted for 20 of their team’s 23 points in the second half. The Storm were without key contributor Taylor Davis throughout the second half. Davis was injured in the second quarter and didn’t return.
“I thought we played really well against an experienced team,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We’ve played each other a lot of times, so we knew what to expect.”
Mikayla Solloway added eight points, seven rebounds, and six assists to the victory, and was also named to the all-tournament team.
In the consolation game, Hamilton held B-G to just four points over the final 11:37 outscoring the Bobcats 18-4 during that stretch to rally for the victory. “We absolutely couldn’t score in the final quarter, and everything else was going in the wrong direction,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.
Morgan Bullis, B-G’s all-tournament pick, led her club with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Sherburne-Earlville advanced to the finals on the strength of its pressure defense forcing 25 B-G turnovers in Friday’s 41-point victory.
Solloway, more often than not, finished at the end of fast breaks scoring 17 of her game-high 24 points before halftime. Berg netted 13, and Van Althuis added five assists. “We’re at our best when we’re pressuring and running the floor,” Mulligan said. “Mikayla and Jordan do a good job of feeding off each other.”
Unadilla Valley held Hamilton to one point in the second quarter to take an 11-point lead into halftime, and outscored the Emerald Knights by 13 in the third stanza to reach the finals. Anderson scored 10 of her 13 points in the third quarter, and Davis scored six points in the quarter finishing with a team-high 19.

Oneonta 46, Norwich 27
ONEONTA – Five-time defending Section IV champion Oneonta handed Norwich an opening-night defeat in a rematch of last year’s Class B championship game.
The ‘Jackets’ Mariah Ruff returned from a thumb injury to score 13 points, and Dani Nicosia added nine. Oneonta pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Purple Tornado 17-4 to open a 42-17 advantage. “We did a pretty good job on Ruff, they just beat in transition and got a lot of offensive boards and kick-ins,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “When we got them in the halfcourt and under control, they didn’t score.”
Norwich shot just 21 percent in its opening game of the season, and is currently playing four total freshmen and sophomores among the nine players on the roster, all of whom are playing their first year of varsity basketball. “We had some good looks that just didn’t go in,” Bennett said. “The gap from junior varsity to varsity in high school athletics is probably the biggest in girls’ basketball. I think we’ll be able to play with (Oneonta) in February (at the end of the season.).”
Breanna Cashman led NHS with nine points.
