Five plead not guilty in county court
NORWICH – Seven people charged with a variety of felony and misdemeanor crimes appeared in county court Friday, five pleading not guilty to the charges brought against them while two others entered guilty pleas and were subsequently sentenced to interim probation.
• Scott L. Lavoie, 24, West Sand Lake, pleaded not guilty to one count of first degree criminal nuisance, a class E felony.
The charges stem from an Aug. 1 drug raid at 8 Pleasant St., Norwich, where Lavoie was residing, that resulted in authorities confiscating an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency, heroin, drug paraphernalia and other narcotics.
Lavoie was released on his own recognizance and could face up to four years in state prison if he were to violate the terms and/or conditions of his release. He will re-appear in court at a later date.
• Stephen A. Georgia, 24, Davenport, was sentenced to one year interim probation after pleading guilty to one count of felony driving while intoxicated. If he successfully completes his interim probation, the felony charge will be dropped to a misdemeanor and Georgia will subsequently be sentenced to three years probation with credit for the original year of interim probation served.
In July, Georgia was indicted on charges of operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .08 of 1 percent or higher and driving while intoxicated, both class E felonies. It was alleged that Georgia – on or about May 18 on county Road 36 in the Town of Norwich – operated a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .11 of 1 percent and was observed swaying while he walked, speaking with a slurred voice, having bloodshot and watery eyes and smelling strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest.
