Norwich 61, Chenango Valley 47
FENTON - In a battle of state-ranked unbeatens, Norwich won a rematch of last year’s Section IV Class B final dominating the second half to pull away for the win.
Grant Brightman scored a career-high 15 points off the bench, and Kyle Edwards scored 12 to go with seven rebounds. Michael Sutton added 10 assists, and the Tornado finished with 18 assists and a season-low eight turnovers.
“It was really good for us to go into a hostile environment against a good team and get the win,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “But we’re not going to make more of the win that that. We came into the game well prepared, and our kids were confident. It showed on the court tonight.”
Norwich stretched a two-point halftime lead to 45-34 at the end of the third, and a Brightman basket with under two minutes to play had Norwich up by 20.
Edwards was equally effective on the defensive side of the ball checking CV’s high-scoring forward, Zack Collins. Collins was limited to 11 points on three three-pointers. “Collins is one of the best players in our league taking the ball to the rim, and to hold him without a two-point field goal, that was just a tremendous defensive effort by Kyle,” Collier said. “We had great defense from our entire team tonight, but it all started with Kyle.”
Norwich used all 11 men on its roster, and eight different players had at least two baskets. “Our game plan all season is to pressure teams, and wear them down,” Collier said. “We were able to do that tonight.”
Norwich is idle until next Tuesday when it plays at Windsor.

Susquehanna Valley 51, Norwich 36
CONKLIN – Norwich, still missing a couple of wrestlers from its lineup, showed vast improvement over its previous dual meet dropping a final to Susquehanna Valley Tuesday night.
The Sabers, coming off a team title at the Chenango Valley Duals last weekend, gained the edge over NHS with a complete lineup in which they accepted four forfeits.
“We had a few more horses in the race, but we’re still missing some kids that might have made a difference,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey.
The Tornado lightweights picked up four straight wins from 99 to 120 pounds with three pins and one forfeit. Cole Rifanburg, Carter Hubbard, and Trey Muserallo all won by pin at 106, 113, and 120 pounds respectively to close the meet score to 39-36 with two matches remaining.
“Cole’s kid was stalling on the bottom, but to Cole’s credit, he stuck with it and got the pin,” Downey said. “Trey has had that one mistake in matches that has cost him. Last night, he didn’t make any mistakes and was able to get the pin with two seconds left. When we get our full lineup, that type of result can make a difference between a win and a loss.”
Norwich is idle until next Monday when it wrestles at Sherburne-Earlville.

Sherburne-Earlville 54, Morrisville-Eaton 18
MORRSVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville showed balance in its lineup in Tuesday’s dual meet victory at Morrisville-Eaton.
The Marauders won all but four matches to improve their dual record to 5-2. “It was a good match for us,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “Our upper weights have been our strength, but we were able to get some wins from our younger guys at lightweight and middleweight.”
The victory comes on the heels of a 4-1 dual mark to place second at the Valley Duals last weekend hosted by Ilion. Kevin Dunshee and Garrett DuVall went unbeaten in their five matches, while Hunter Owen, Jack Buell, and Dalton Sopchak suffered just one loss.
S-E hosts Norwich on Monday.
