Sherburne-Earlville 67, Clinton 66
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville escaped with its fifth straight victory Thursday night turning back previously-unbeaten Clinton.
The Warriors, down 64-58 with a minute to play, closed the gap after a three-pointer by Michael Hayduk, and back-to-back layups by Malaquias Canery.
Sam Caton’s layup off a pass from Austin Jasper helped S-E hold off the charge, and Elijah Morris’s free throw with 32 seconds left was the margin of victory. “It was a game of runs, and in the end, we got the last run,” said S-E head coach Kevin Vibbard.
The Marauders briefly took command in the second half scoring the first 11 points to lead 42-33. Carter Cole’s layup and three-pointer ended the salvo, and preceded an avalanche of long-range bombs by the Warriors.
Clinton’s Patrick Ziemba hit a three-pointer at the 4:28 mark to end S-E’s run, and Clinton finished the quarter on a 19-2 spurt. “We changed up our defense in the second half, and we were able to get out on them a little bit,” Vibbard said. “What did they hit, four three-pointers in a row? We went from up nine points to down eight. I thought our kids showed a lot of resilience coming back in the fourth quarter.”
Matt Smith’s three ball seven seconds into the fourth started a 13-2 S-E spurt that put the host club in front for good. Caton scored 10 points in the final quarter to finish with a season-high 20. Jasper totaled 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Canery led Clinton with 22. The Marauders (5-1) play at Adirondack Saturday.
