City sales tax flat

NORWICH – Sales tax collections in the City of Norwich are flat this year despite the addition of the Byrne Dairy convenience store and fueling station on West Main Street.
Mayor Joseph P. Maiurano said gains were made from the new business, but the city’s overall collections were stagnant in 2012 due to other businesses that folded and a loss of sales for a period of time while McDonald’s closed and rebuilt its restaurant on South Broad Street. The city receives 1.5 percent from all sales within its borders. It does not delineate the collections from any particular business, said the Mayor.
Sales taxes taken in through November are more than $1.136 million as compared to the overall 2012 budget projections for $1.372. Maiurano said November’s sales were better during the same period last year. “We still have one month to go. We have a pretty good shot at meeting our estimate for the year,” he said
