SOUTH OTSELIC – A strong fourth quarter aided by 8-for-10 foul shooting lifted Otselic Valley to its second win over Blessed Virgin Mary this season Monday night at home.
Trevor Marston scored 11 of his 14 points in the final quarter, while also playing shut-down defense on BVM’s leading scorer, James Payne. Payne had 18 points in the two schools’ first meeting, but just two last night.
“We’ve had trouble scoring all year, but tonight we did a better job getting the ball to the basket and getting the ball in places where we can score,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We’ve been hurrying our shots, but our judgement on shot selection was much better.”
Connor Smith also keyed a 25-14 final period scoring all eight of his points off the bench. Jason Olin added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Matt Neal poured in a dozen points as well.
OV (5-2) is idle until Dec. 27 when it plays in the DeRuyter Tournament.

GREENE - Greene evened its record on the season Monday night beating its second Southern Tier Athletic Conference team this month.
Dan Treadwell scored 22 points for the Trojans, Joe Beckwith knocked in four three-pointers for 12 points, and Brandon Davis added 10.
Greene shot a season-high 59 percent from the field, and that included eight made three-pointers. “We’ve haven’t come close to shooting that well this season,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Both teams shot it well, but we were able to get some defensive stops when we needed them. This puts us in a nice position to make run before the holidays.”
Greene (2-2) plays Deposit on Wednesday.

SHERBURNE – In a non-league matchup Monday, Sherburne-Earlville picked up eight pins to go with a pair of forfeits in a lopsided victory over the undermanned Purple Tornado.
The Marauders, leading 36-26 with four weight classes left, closed with forfeit and three pins from Jack Buell (170), Dalton Sopchak (182), and Gavin Paul (195).
“They were down a couple of guys, and we just got more pins out of our lightweights and middleweights than we normally do,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “We’re really strong in the upper weights, and that is where (Norwich) is really young.”
Norwich’s Ty Rifanburg (99) and Cole Rifanburg (106) won by technical fall and pin, Nick Murphy earned a pin at 145, and Josh Meyers edged Brady Sopchak, 11-10, in the 152-pound matchup.

ONEONTA – Coming off its high pin total of the season last week, Norwich rolled its single lowest team total of 2012-2013 campaign, yet still came away with all five team points Monday.
Matt Gladstone’s 513 series led the Tornado, who host Chenango Forks Wednesday.

Sherburne-Earlville 3, Holland Patent 2
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville dug itself out of an 8-1 hole in the final game, and overcame a two-one deficit in games as well rallying to beat Holland Patent, 18-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 Monday night.
The Marauders’ defense was on point with Julia Opolka charting 24 digs and nine stuff blocks. Opolka also had nine kills, Brooke Wright had six kills, and Destinie Holmquist picked up a team-high 11 assists.
“To me, this is a turning point win in our program,” said S-E coach Ed Holmquist. “We had girls diving all over the floor and they never quit. We were down big, but we chipped away and dug it out.”
S-E (3-3, 2-2) plays at Ilion Thursday.
