NHS Winter Concert tonight

NORWICH – The Norwich High School Music Department will hold its annual Winter Concert at 7 tonight at the NHS auditorium.
The concert will feature performances by the school’s Treble and Mixed choirs; Madrigal Singers; and String and Wind ensembles; concluding with a performance of the department’s “Winter Wonderland,” featuring all five groups performing a finale of seasonal tunes under the direction of Wind Ensemble Director Amy Rogers.
The Treble Choir, under the direction of NHS Vocal Music Teacher Mary Mayo, will perform Mark Patterson’s “Hope is a Hidden Star,” featuring cello soloist Allison Rehn, while the Madrigal Singers and Mixed Choir – also under Mayo’s direction – will perform “Carol of the Bells,” a traditional Ukranian Carol; “Lux Aurumque,” by Eric Whitacre; “O Fortuna,” from Carmina Burana and featuring pianists Robert Oehme and Anita Humer; and “O Magnum Mysterium,” by Morten Lauridsen.
Under the direction of Allison Rehn, the String Ensemble will perform “Bashana Haba ‘Ah,” by Nurit Hirsch, and “Molly On the Shore: an Irish Reel,” by Percy Grainger. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Rogers, will perform “Amparito Roca,” by Jamie Texidor, and “Variations on a Korean Folksong,” by John Barnes Chance.
A last minute addition, according to Mayo – who said she was approached by a group of her students Monday – Mixed Choir President Tambria Schroeder will be making a special statement at the start of tonight’s concert dedicated to the community of Newtown, Connecticut and the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
