Norwich victory comes at a cost

Norwich 57, Windsor 34
WINDSOR – Norwich extended its unbeaten string to five wins this season, but the victory Tuesday night came at a cost.
The Norwich raced to a 34-16 halftime lead over the Black Knights highlighted by Kyle Edwards’ 15 points. During those first 16 minutes, though, starters Mike Sutton and Storm Cook went down with injuries along with backup guard Matt Burke. None of the three returned to play in the second half.
“We’re really lucky to have kids who can step into different roles, and we play everybody on our roster and everybody contributes,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “We’ve been giving minutes to a lot of our kids on the bench, and we really needed them tonight.”
Norwich was down to seven healthy players in the second half, and for the first time all season, the opponent outscored the Tornado in the third quarter. That anomaly was rectified during an 18-8 fourth quarter as Danny Carson scored seven of his 11 points, and Edwards added five more to finish with a game-high 20.
Edwards and Carson had five steals apiece, Norwich had 21 team assists, and finished with just 13 turnovers. “We’re hoping that our guys that got hurt can come back quickly,” Collier said. “We won the game, but we’re going to reassess our lineup and see if we need to bring any players up (from junior varsity).”
Zan Stewart added nine points off the bench, who had 24 total bench points in the contest.

Holland Patent, 63, Sherburne-Earlville 62
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville failed to get off the winning shot attempt in the final seconds as Holland Patent snapped the Marauders’ five-game winning streak Tuesday night.
Down seven to S-E at the half, Holland Patent jumped back into the game hitting five three-pointers in the third quarter. Lefty Logan Reinhold hit three treys, and Mike Strumpfler netted a pair of trifectas as the game was tied at 49-49 entering the fourth. Reinhold had three baskets in the last quarter, and a pair of free throws from Matt Curtis gave Holland Patent a 63-60 lead with 17 seconds left.
S-E’s Sam Caton put back a missed shot closing the score to 63-62. After Holland Patent missed a pair of free throw attempts down the stretch, the Marauders’ last-ditch effort fell short.
“I felt the game was lost in the third quarter,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We had a nice lead and let it evaporate. We’ve had three games in a row come down to the last second, and anything can happen in those situations. We just happened to lose this one.”
Caton and Austin Jasper scored 18 points apiece to lead S-E (5-2), and Jesse Yerton added 12 points.

Greene 54, Deposit 30
GREENE – With one starter out due to illness and another one ailing, Greene turned to veteran guard Kaitlin Gorton to carry the scoring load in Tuesday’s victory over Deposit.
Gorton scored a season-high 26 points, most of those coming on drives to the basket. The Trojans also crashed the offensive boards picking up 23 offensive caroms. Junior Jessica David spearheaded the defense totaling eight rebounds and eight steals.
“We were a little stagnant offensively early in the game because we had some kids in different positions tonight,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “It took our kids a little while to adjust to the different defenses Deposit was playing, but we did a better job of recognizing what they were doing in the second half.”
Greene plays at Harpursville Friday.

Over the next two quarters, the Bobcats shot a combined 2-for-15 to fall behind by 20. “I think we just got a little tired mentally and physically from playing so hard in the first quarter,” said B-G coach Bob Conway. “I know we’ll struggle with our scoring this year, but the last two games I’ve seen some sunshine through the clouds.
