NORWICH – Norwich made up for a subpar shooting night with lock-down defense.
The Purple Tornado forced 30 Windsor turnovers as the Black Knights, at times, struggled to get the ball past midcourt. “Thank goodness we played well defensively, and we finally starting making shots and attacking the basket in the fourth quarter,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett, whose club shot 26 percent for the game.
Coming off a seven-point third quarter, NHS, as Bennett mentioned, saved its best offense for last. On its first possession of the fourth quarter, junior Jennifer Borfitz canned a three ball. Borfitz added a steal and layup,a nd contributed another trifecta off a feed from Breanna Cashman that made it 36-17. The unselfish play continued moments later as Cassie Sutton drove into the lane and fed Shelby Benjamin for a layup.
Borfitz finished with 15, while Carin Kuhn added 14. Kuhn carried the Norwich scoring load the first three quarters with 12 of her markers including a pair of three-pointers.
In the junior varsity matchup, Norwich won its fourth straight game beating Windsor, 49-14. Savannah Williams scored 10 points and Meghan Komendarek added nine.

SHERBURNE – Holland Patent’s all-state forward, Allison Freiermuth, scored 22 points to lead four of her teammates in double figures in handing Sherburne-Earlville its second loss of the season Wednesday.
Freiermuth scored 13 of her points in the third quarter helping extend the lead to 20 points. “We just got outmuscled inside and they killed us on the boards,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We had some turnovers, so we need to be stronger with the ball the next time we play them.”
Jordan VanAlthuis was the lone S-E player in double figures scoring 14 points.

OTEGO – Unatego took control of Wednesday’s game against Oxford in the second half outscoring the Blackhawks 44-22 over the final two periods.
Oxford was down one starter due to illness, and lost another to injury late in the second quarter leaving it with just two bench players. “Down two guys, we were just outmatched in the second half,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “They have a pretty good defensive trap, and we turned it over quite a bit.”
Kellen Komenda and Tanner Winchester scored 16 points apiece for Unatego.
Oxford’s Andrew Golden continued his strong start to the 2012-2013 season pouring in a game-high 29 points. The Blackhawks play at Delhi Friday.

GREENE – Greene’s offense topped 70 points for the second straight game as four Trojans finished in double figures scoring in a rout of Deposit Wednesday.
The Trojans led 40-14 at halftime, and barely let up after the break, even though the reserves were seeing most of the time on the floor. “We got some good looks at the basket early in the game, and the shots were falling,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We wanted to carry over the momentum from the Owego game, and we were just hitting on all cylinders tonight.”
Greene hit five three balls in the first quarter, three from Joe Beckwith and two from Zach Wentlent. Wentlent led with 17 points, Beckwith scored 14, Dan Treadwell had 13 points, eight assists, and six steals, and forward Brandon Davis added 10. Greene (3-2) is at Harpursville Saturday.

Corbin Palmer scored 20 points to lead B-G’s four players in double figures scoring. “We wanted to be more aggressive in the first half, and I felt we did that,” said B-G coach Greg Warren. “We got to the basket, we ran the floor well, and we played good zone defense that helped us create easy scoring opportunities.”
Austin Bauerle had 13 points and 12 boards, Lucas Butcher scored 13, and Brooks Harmon had 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Mike Carlin contributed 10 rebounds and two steals.

OXFORD – In a forfeit-heavy non-league dual meet, Oxford’s more complete lineup gave it the decisive edge in a victory over the Purple Tornado Wednesday.
Only five matches were contested as Oxford was granted six forfeits. “Unfortunately for them, they didn’t have a lot of kids available tonight,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft. “We tried to match up in as many weights as possible and make the best of it.”
Oxford senior Jody Smith (145) won by decision over the Purple Tornado’s Nick Murphy, 10-3. Nate Hansen (106) garnered a pin for Oxford, while Joe Nelson (113) remained unbeaten with a first-period pin.
NHS’s Tristan Rifanburg started the dual meet with a pin of Austin Crandall, while Tornado senior Jeremy Hamilton made a successful foray into the 195-pound ranks taking a technical fall win over Erik Eldred.

Matt Gladstone capped a 601 series with a 248 game, the best single game for the Tornado. Adam Bonnot notched a 577 and Corey Huggins rolled a 575 triple. Norwich is idle until Jan. 2 when it travels to Susquehanna Valley.

OXFORD – In a forfeit-heavy non-league dual meet, Oxford’s more complete lineup gave it the decisive edge in a victory over the Purple Tornado Wednesday.
Only five matches were contested as Oxford was granted six forfeits. “Unfortunately for them, they didn’t have a lot of kids available tonight,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft. “We tried to match up in as many weights as possible and make the best of it.”
Oxford senior Jody Smith (145) won by decision over the Purple Tornado’s Nick Murphy, 10-3. Nate Hansen (106) garnered a pin for Oxford, while Joe Nelson (113) remained unbeaten with a first-period pin.
NHS’s Tristan Rifanburg started the dual meet with a pin of Austin Crandall, while Tornado senior Jeremy Hamilton made a successful foray into the 195-pound ranks taking a technical fall win over Erik Eldred.
