Wonka, Jasper lead locall all-state football picks
CHENANGO COUNTY – Two-time all-state football players Paul Wonka of Oxford and Austin Jasper of Sherburne-Earlville are among seven area athletes receiving recognition today in a release by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Wonka, a record-breaking running back, was a second team pick in Class D, while Jasper was also a second team selection, his honor coming in the Class C ranks. Also making the grade were Jake Mazzarella, Bainbridge-Guilford, a second-team Class D linebacker; and Mike Beckwith, Greene, a third team honoree at linebacker in Class C. Gaining honorable mention status were Kyle Edwards, Norwich, Class B; Chris Kehoe, Greene, Class C; and Kody Homann, Unadilla Valley, Class D.
Wonka became just the second Oxford back to post back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Despite missing one game due to injury, Wonka set a new Oxford school record for career rushing yards, and in his final game, established a new Chenango County rushing mark finishing with 3,726 yards.
