Unatego 64, Greene 49
GREENE - Unatego went deep in the first half to the dismay of Greene and head coach Rick Smith.
The Spartans made four of the first five three-pointers they attempted – all in the first 10 minutes– and built a double-digit lead that they rode out in a matchup for second place in the Midstate Athletic Conference Wednesday.
Kellen Komenda had a pair of early threes to finished with 14 points, and teammate Tanner Winchester also buried a trey in the opening quarter on his way to a 14-point night. “To be honest, we really hadn’t seen them make a lot of three-pointers this season, so that was a surprise,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We wanted to limit their ability to dribble penetrate inside, and they made us pay for it.”
Unatego led by 12 after one quarter, and extended the lead to as many as 16 in the first half before Greene cut the deficit back to 11 at halftime. After Dan Treadwell’s three ball for Greene to start to the second half cut the deficit to eight, Unatego rattled off 10 straight points to extend the lead back to 18.
Greene closed the quarter with seven straight points, and Zach Wentlent’s three-point play to end the quarter had the Trojans back within 10. The Trojans came as close as seven in the fourth, that after another Wentlent three-point play made it 53-46 with 5:58 left.
Against Unatego’s trapping press, Greene committed three turnovers down the stretch that led to Unatego layups. Wentlent’s basket was the last field goal for the Trojans, who were limited to free throws the rest of the way. “When we got it down to seven or eight points, we either committed a foul or turned it over,” Smith said. “Everything that we didn’t want to do, we did in this game. Unatego was playing on back-to-back nights, but they seemed to have more energy than us.”
Treadwell led all scorers with 21 points, and Wentlent finished with 15. The loss snapped Greene’s seven-game winning streak. The Trojans face Unadilla Valley on Friday.

Chenango Forks 48, Norwich 31
NORWICH – If not for the holes in its lineup, Norwich may have sprung another upset victory Wednesday evening against Chenango Forks.
The Tornado surrendered six forfeits worth 36 team points, but won the majority of the matches contested on the mat. “The guys we had in our lineup wrestled great,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “After seeing our guys tonight, we’re right where we want to be heading into the STAC Tournament and the Class B Tournament. The guys looked really good.”
Norwich received a big boost early on from Trey Muserallo, who earned a hard-fought 13-9 win over Justin Rouse at 113 pounds. In a matchup of previous Section IV champions, Norwich sophomore Tristan Rifanburg (132) remained unbeaten on the season routing Jacob Green, 11-0. And freshman Nick Murphy (138) emerged from a 0-0 tie after one period to pin Jimmy Dyer midway through the second.
“Green is no weak opponent, and he’s been around for a long time,” Downey said. “Once again, when Tristan is in the spotlight...he’s just so technical and very physical. He just breaks tough kids down mentally.”
Murphy, who wrestles between NHS standouts Rifanburg and Frank Garcia in the Norwich lineup, is clearly reaping the benefits of those wrestling room wars, Downey said. “Nick takes his lumps in practice, but it’s only making him better,” the NHS coach said. “He beat a quality kid, and that’s a kid we’ll probably see in the STAC Tournament this weekend in Elmira.”
