6OTS exhibiting fantasy artwork of D. Michael Price
OXFORD – On Friday, 6 On The Square (6OTS) will be hosting an opening reception for internationally celebrated, local author/illustrator, D. Michael Price, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit of original oil and acrylic paintings will run from Feb. 7 through March 24. All are welcome to meet the artist at the Friday reception which is free of charge. View original art from one of Chenango County’s most prized visual storytellers and let his wondrous artwork transport you to another realm.
Be prepared to be drawn into a giant woodland world of forest elves, gnomes, fairies and fantastic anthropomorphic reptiles, rodents and insects. D. Michael Price is a very talented fantasy artist whose works have graced the walls of hundreds of galleries both nationally and internationally. Well-respected as a successful fine artist as well as published children’s book author/illustrator, Michael’s works of fantasy art in the acrylic and oil mediums on canvas are sought after by private collectors worldwide.
Because Price is such an astute observer and a skilled interpreter, he’s able to achieve extensive, exquisite detail and atmosphere that can only be described as magical. In his illustrative genre, you will find he is simultaneously a traditionalist and an innovator. Illustrators of the late 19th to early 20th century, such as Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth, two of his favorites, as well as Kenneth Grahame and Johnny Gruelle might have been some of the inspiration for Price, but that’s where the tradition ends. That was an era of more muted tones. Michael’s paintings are modern and bold, with a vivid, graphic punch, perfect for today’s hi-def, richly-saturated-hues generation. His love of the enchanted beauty to be found in the hills, valleys, forests and streams around his Bainbridge home in Chenango County, provide him with constant inspiration.
Price earned his B.F.A. degree with honors from SUNY Oneonta, with an emphasis on oil painting and book design. He’s published three children’s books: Across the River in 1995, The Great Bee Race in 2005, and Hoppin’ Mad in 2009. His original art works are the illustrations for his books and their earth friendly themes share his joy for nature and all life forms.
Price undertakes commission artwork for various publications; he has worked for many prestigious houses in this regard including such noted publications as National Geographic magazine. He has lectured on art and the creative process in colleges and schools, including Oxford Academy, and has been the artist in residence at Roberson Museum in Binghamton. Michael is a member of the Chenango County Council of the Arts and the Cooperstown Art Association.
6 On The Square invites you to come for light refreshments at the reception and meet the artist. Later, the exhibit can be viewed at 6OTS one-hour before and during performances. Visit 6OTS on the web - www.6onthesquare.org - to see the show schedule.
