SHERBURNE - Sherburne-Earlville burst out of the gates quickly in its regular season finale against Canastota.
The Marauders started the game with a 14-2 lead three minutes into play, and built their lead to as many as 25 points in the first half en route to the Center State Conference division win. The win also clinched a tie for the division title along with Clinton.
“Our guys really came out ready to play,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We had five different guys score in the first quarter, and we played outstanding defense. We had a lot of good balance, and this was a good way to get ready for sectionals.”
Jesse Yerton hit a pair of threes in the first quarter, Matt Smith also had three first-quarter buckets, and senior Sam Caton scored 10 in the first, two of those points on a first-quarter alley-oop dunk as the lead was 36-11 late in the opening half.
Yerton led with 13 points, Caton scored 12, and Smith had 11 in the S-E victory, who will likely host a first-round Section III playoff game on Friday.

OTEGO – Unatego’s pressure defense paid dividends in the final quarter. The Spartans forced numerous Greene turnovers over the last eight minutes to pull away for the win.
Tyler Butler scored six points in the fourth for Unatego, and guard Kellen Komenda sealed the win hitting 4-for-4 from the foul line. “Unatego thrives on creating turnovers, and we did a good job with limiting those until the fourth quarter,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “The turnovers hit us in the last quarter, and that really was the difference.”
Brandon Davis scored 16 points for Greene, and Zach Wentlent added 11. Greene hosts Oxford tonight.

GREENE – An eight-point spurt in the second quarter gave the Trojans the lead for good, who extended their winning streak to four games Tuesday night against Afton.
Rebecca Smith scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring night for Greene. “We also had seven different poeple with assists and seven people with steals,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We were a little shaky on offense at times, but I do like the fact we are distributing the ball well.”
Connor Decker had 12 points for Afton in the loss.

OXFORD - Oxford finished a six-win season with its third straight victory topping Delhi for the second time Tuesday evening.
Megan Golden scored 16 points for the Blackhawks (6-12), and hit a three to start a 14-4 third quarter. Sarah Renaud had seven of her 13 points in third as Oxford extended a 15-14 halftime lead to 11 points. “It was the third straight game where he had a really good third quarter,” said Blackhawks coach Chris Palmer. “Winning our third straight game was a nice way to send off the seniors.”
Renaud finished added 11 rebounds, while freshman Rachel Seiler dished out five assists.

Jennifer Borfitz led three Norwich players in double figures scoring with 16 points. Breanna Cashman added 14 and Shelby Benjamin 13. A box score will appear in Thursday’s Evening Sun.

ROME – Sherburne-Earlville outdistanced the competition by over 300 pins, and averaged a 207 per man to win the CASK league tournament title Tuesday afternoon at King Pin Lanes in Rome.
The Marauders posted a 3,111 over team score with four of five bowlers topping the 600 series mark. Doug Urben (666) and Jonny Sulton (665) went one-two for S-E finished just a pin apart, Dave Sulton notched a 613 series, and Zach Miles a 606. “The boys showing the true meaning of team tonight,” said S-E coach Don Philhower. “To average 207 per man in the league tournament is just great.”
