St. Baldrick's raises money for childhood cancer research
NORWICH – In a continuing effort to advance childhood cancer research, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is making its way to Norwich for a ninth year of fundraising. The event is set to take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, at Park Place Restaurant and Lounge.
Each year, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser brings in people from all over the county who hope to make a difference in combating the realities of childhood cancer, leaving behind good memories, a sense of pride for participants, and – of course – dozens of freshly-shaven heads. This year promises to be no different, said event organizer A. Jones, whose involvement with St. Baldrick’s has become a cherished custom between him and his nine-year-old son, Tyler.
“There are a lot of organizations out there that do things for other types of cancer. This is the second largest organization that provides childhood cancer research funds, only behind the federal government,” he said, noting the tremendous importance of continuing cancer research. “If we were to find a cure for childhood cancer, we’re one step to helping everyone, regardless of age.”
Last year, the local St. Baldrick’s fundraiser brought in 27 people who were willing to gain sponsors and shave their head for the cause. Between sponsorships, donations and money raised the night of the event, a total of $21,426 was brought in. “For what we can do with only a limited number of people, that’s quite a bit of money,” said Jones.
