S-E considers new buses for the new school year

SHERBURNE – During a Sherburne-Earlville Central School District Board of Education meeting Monday night, the board discussed the possibility of replacing the school district's bus fleet.
The issue of what to do with the fleet has been discussed for several months and the board has been leaning more towards the option of leasing rather than purchasing to replace a majority of the school's current fleet.
The benefit of new buses are numerous, including increased safety and greater fuel efficiency, according to school officials. If new buses are leased, the district could potentially save $1,670 annually in fuel costs per school bus. It is also estimated that the district would save approximately $400,000 in fuel costs over the proposed five-year lease period and subsequently, it would receive a 100 percent match in state aid for the monies saved in fuel expenses, which could then be used as a down payment to permanently acquire buses should the board decide to purchase them at the end of the lease period.
Under the terms of the leasing agreement, the district will be able to return unnecessary buses if the student population decreases in the next few years.
It was noted by members of the board that, regardless of the decision made in respect to the entirety of the fleet, all five of the special needs buses must be replaced in the 2013-2014 school budget. Furthermore, the majority of the district's fleet will be wrapping up their seventh year of service at the end of this school year. If nothing is done with the district's current buses as part of this year's budget, their trade-in value will see a significant drop next year.
Options to sell the buses privately via the use of eBay - as BOCES has had a fair amount of luck doing so - were also discussed.
After discussing the issue, the board motioned without contention to have Assistant Superintendent Todd Griffin look into trading-in the entire fleet, minus a few buses with low mileage, and replacing them with leased buses. If the board moves forward with the pursuit of replacement buses, it will be up for vote along with the school’s proposed budget in May.
