Sen. Libous, Morrisville State Colllege partner to award Guernsey Memorial $1,000 in funding through BOOKS program
NORWICH – The Books Open Opportunities for Kids to Succeed (BOOKS) program, a collaboration of Senator Tom Libous and Morrisville State College, has awarded $1,000 to the Guernsey Memorial Library to fund summer and yearlong programs.
BOOKS Director Tia Zink stated, “The library may have the greatest collection of books in the world, but if kids don’t see it as a fun and inviting place, we aren’t going to get them through the doors. In addition to the programming grants we also provide grants to the libraries to purchase new children’s books. Since the average children’s book only stays in print five to seven years, it is important that the newest books be available in order to maintain a child’s interest.”
These funds will assist with the 2013 program Bells and Motley’s Bawshou and the Dragon. The money will also help out with supplies for the making of a dragon mask, a hands-on part of the Bells and Motley program, described as participatory Chinese folktale performance.
Guernsey Memorial children’s librarian Kim Hazen added that the workshop and performance will be the finale for the library’s summer series and will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. August 16 at the library.
BOOKS has awarded more than $25,000 in grants to 24 libraries across Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Tioga counties to initiate, expand, and enhance children’s programming.
“Reading is one of the most fundamental life skills that can assure a child’s success in school and in life,” noted Senator Libous in a statement. “By creating free programs especially for them, we make the library an exciting place for fun and learning.”
Zink added, “All the programs for which BOOKS provides funding are free. Each library submits a grant proposal in a competitive process. Many Chenango County libraries are receiving grants this year, including Afton, Bainbridge, Oxford, Greene, and Norwich. “
Parents and their children can learn more about BOOKS and find fun things to do including a virtual celebrity read along, word searches, puzzles, and a local schedule of events by visiting BOOKSprogram.com.
