2013 CNY Regional Envirothon kicks off Wednesday

SHERBURNE – Hundreds of CNY high school students are expected to gather and compete in the annual Central New York Regional Envirothon Wednesday and Thursday at Rogers Environmental Education Center. High school students from Greene, Bainbridge, Otselic Valley and DCMO BOCES will represent Chenango County this year alongside others from Cayuga, Madison and Onondaga Counties. By the end of Thursday, only one winning team from each county will be left standing, qualifying to compete in the New York State Envirothon scheduled for May 30 and 31 at Morrisville State College.
This marks the second time in two years that the Rogers Center has hosted the annual, regional Envirothon, having done so eight times in total since 1995.
“The Friends of Rogers are very excited to host this great event at Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne,” said the center’s executive director Simon M. Solomon. “Rogers Center has hosted this event off and on since its inception and we are thrilled to be able to continue this tradition.”
Last year, hundreds of students from 21 different school districts converged on Rogers Center for the 2012 CNY Regional Envirothon, each team working in unison to unravel 25 separate quagmires at five different stations spread throughout the conservation center’s network of nature trails. Just like last year, the different teams will square off against one another in a frantic attempt to complete the five hands-on tests with greater proficiency than their competitors. The tests constitute a number of different environmental problems touching on subject matters such as aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, as well as a current environmental issue, this year’s being “sustainable rangeland,” requiring students to give an oral presentation. Conservation professionals hailing from various government and private agencies will judge the competition.
Coordinated by the various Soil and Water Conservation Districts across the state, Envirothon is designed to expose students to enriched curriculums by integrating environmental studies and career options in the conservation field into their educations.
