Oneonta eases by Tornado girls, 11-1

Softball

Oneonta 11, Norwich 1
NORWICH – Oneonta combined its speed game on offense with the power pitching of Brianna Baker to beat the Purple Tornado Tuesday afternoon.
Oneonta finished with 14 hits, many of those slap bunts that pressured the NHS defense. Cami Cleveland and Baker had three-hit days for the ‘Jackets, while Erin Mushtare and Hayley Dower went 2-for-4.
Baker did allow seven hits to Norwich, but she finished with 17 strikeouts. “She is probably one of the three hardest throwers we’ve seen,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore of Baker. “She moves the ball around well, and she had us sitting on our heels.”
Molly Moore and Hannah Eddy went 2-for-3 on the Norwich side of the ledger. The Purple Tornado girls play at Johnson City Friday and travel to the Windsor Tournament on Saturday.

Baseball

Oneonta 5, Norwich 4
NORWICH – Oneonta's Mason Montgomery drove in two runs, and doubled and scored a run in the pivotal fourth inning to give Oneonta a five-run lead in Tuesday's victory over Norwich (2-5).
Norwich closed to within one run scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth. After one run came in on an error, Colby Griffin, Ricky Runyon, and Cody Barnes followed with ribbies.
The Tornado left eight runners on base in the game (Oneonta left one) including two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning. "We played good baseball tonight and we've been playing good baseball the past three games," said Norwich coach Rich Turnbull. "We just didn't get a hit at the right time tonight."
Norwich pitcher Cody Graves was the hard-luck loser. Graves scattered seven hits, struck out 11, and walked just two. Graves finished the game striking out six of the final eight batters, and didn't allow a run the final three innings. "That was the best I have seen Cody pitch on the varsity level," Turnbull said.
Norwich is at Johnson City Friday.

Down 4-1, an errant pickoff attempt with the bases loaded scored one run for Greene, Dalton Brower had an RBI groundout, and Luke Day singled in the tying run. Day stole second, and eventually scored on an infield hit and ensuing throwing error.
Oxford led early getting RBIs from Andrew Golden and Richard Ryan. Matt Moore had three hits for Oxford, and his single and run scored helped the Blackhawks build a three-run lead.
Zach Lindow pitched six innings for Greene to get the win, and Alex Kozisky earned the save. Oxford had runners on second and third with two outs before Kozisky recorded a strikeout to end the game.

CV-Springfield 18, G-MU 3
CHERRY VALLEY – Cherry Valley-Springfield quickly gained the lead against G-MU scoring in all but one inning in Monday’s win.
The Patriots had 16 hits against three Raiders pitchers, and also took advantage of nine G-MU errors. “We made a lot of mistakes that we haven’t made in the games where we were successful,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “They took advantage of our errors with timely hitting, and we struggled to make contact. It definitely showed that we haven’t had batting practice in a couple of days.”
Ethan Johnson and Jon French had 3-for-4 days to lead CV-S, and each drove in a pair of runs.
Tim French had two hits and one ribbie for G-MU, who play Milford on Wednesday.

Track and Field

Norwich girls topple CV; boys fall to Warriors
NORWICH – Norwich’s girls won all but one event to capture their second league meet win this season rolling past Chenango Valley, 103-35.
On the boys’ side, the Warriors were especially strong in all of the jumps – high, long, and triple – to prevail, 82.3-59.6.
“I thought it would be pretty close and we did have some solid performances, but when we lost the 400-meter relay, I think that mentally beat our team up,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan of the boys’ meet. “We were hoping to squeeze that race out.”
Matt Murray continued his unbeaten string on the track winning the 400 and 1,600 meters, while adding a third first-place finish in the pole vault. Norwich also captured two of the three relays, Nick Murray had a personal-best to win the discus, and Adrian Moses was first in the triple jump.
Chenango Valley’s girls were a bit undermanned, Horan noticed, and didn’t offer much resistance in what was ultimately a rout. Shelby Benjamin, Morgan Hagenbuch, Brooke Bonney, Ruthie Barnes, Danielle Slate, Kristen Slate, and Marysa Campbell all had multiple first-place finishes in the victory.
Norwich competes at Cazenovia next Wednesday in a non-league meet.
