Norwich YMCA pickleball tournament a success

NORWICH – The first Norwich YMCA pickleball tournament, comprised mainly of local YMCA members, drew 22 players in novice and advanced divisions this past weekend.
Teams played in a round-robin format with total points scored overall in each division determining the winners. Jerry Reyes and Brian Tefft captured the novice division scoring 84 points to edge the runner-up duo of Josh Neadom and Rick Ferris by three.
The husband and wife team of Ron and Nikki Brooks won the advanced division totaling 105 points to better second-place Jorge Chavez and Geoffrey Mariner, who racked up 94 points.
The tournament is the first of what will likely be many more at the YMCA, said organizer Barb LoPiccolo. “The number of pickle ball players at the Y has increased significantly the last couple of months through player recruitment and a beginner’s clinic supported by the Y,” LoPiccolo said. “As a result, it was logical to hold a local tournament to introduce players to official tourney play. It was a great success, and we our looking to hold a sanctioned USAPA tournament in the future.”
LoPiccolo said that opportunities to play are available at the Y on a daily basis, and in the summer, outdoor pickleball courts are used on Conkey Ave. in Norwich. Information about the sport is available online at www.usapa.com.
LoPiccolo also thanked the numerous volunteers at the tournament: Sue Heiss, Lekkie Larsen, Maury Keroack, Doug Wilson, Marie DiNoto, Donna Fradenburg, Jim Wysor, Mike Fradenburg, and Tom Larkin.
