Commerce Chenango celebrates 54th annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony

NORWICH – Approximately 150 local business officials and community leaders turned out to the Lt. Warren Eaton Airport in Norwich last night for Commerce Chenango’s 54th annual Dinner and Awards Celebration.
Each year, Commerce Chenango’s annual gala brings out the area’s foremost pioneers in business, local government and community agencies and institutions. And while the mission of Commerce Chenango is to promote business and community in every aspect, the spotlight last night shined particularly bright on this year’s Commerce Chenango award winners: Steven Palmatier, recipient of the Commitment to Community Award; Lisa Natoli, recipient of the Young Professional Award; and Golden Artist Colors, recipient of this year’s Distinguished Business Award.
According to Commerce Chenango President Steve Craig, the efforts of Commerce Chenango are by no means a simple operation, but rather a culmination of time and extraordinary work from its affiliates.
“This is a good chance to thank all the board members, who are essentially volunteers, for all their time and effort over the last year,” said Craig, also recognizing those who played a role in the relocation of Commerce Chenango to its new home on South Broad Street in the City of Norwich earlier this year. “We want to continue to make this a great place to work and to go to school because attracting people to work here, move here and grow here, is the best way for this community to be more prosperous.”
This year’s distinguished business award was presented to New Berlin-based Golden Artist Colors. The paint manufacturing company has a longstanding history in the area, providing acrylic paints to a global market. In 2012, the firm made the announcement that it would be expanding its operations to Norwich with the purchase of the former Apple Converting facility on Hale Street. The project is anticipated to bring 37 new jobs to the Norwich area.
Accepting the award on behalf of Golden Artist Colors was Operations Supervisor Edward Holmquist.
“Golden Artist Colors is built on three corporate constructs: to delight the customer, provide rewards and opportunities for staff, and profitability,” Holmquist said. “Living these core principles drives us to continuously improve quality and lead in the art materials industry ... we are all caregivers, not only in the process of making paint, but also taking care of our community. Just like Commerce Chenango, which is also built on the principles of leadership and economic growth.”
Holding the annual dinner and awards ceremony at the Lt. Warren Eaton Airport, a first, said Craig, “turned out to be a great idea,” adding that his team “really came together and worked like crazy” in transforming one of the airport’s main hangers into a banquet hall.
“It’s been an incredibly busy year,” he added. “We’re raising the tide that’s going to lift all the boats. We’re here, we’re available, and we’re here to help. We need to reinvent what we do to remain relevant. We want to remain vibrant as part of this community.”
