Out of the Darkness Golf Tournament set for May 5 at Bluestone
OXFORD – Team Chenango for Suicide Prevention and Awareness will host its third annual Out of the Darkness Golf Tournament at noon on May 5 at the Bluestone Golf Course in Oxford.
On June 1, the team of nine walkers will make its way to Washington, DC for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk, trekking a total of 18 miles between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. This will be the fourth Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk for Team Chenango member Danielle Williamson, who has participated once on her own - in Boston - as well as in San Francisco and New York City with Team Chenango.
“All of us have lost someone,” said Williamson. “I lost my dad twelve years ago, others have lost brothers, friends ... it hits close to home for many people.”
The golf tournament on May 5 will help to raise funds for the team to participate in the walk.
Registration for the Captain and Crew-style tournament begins at noon at Oxford’s Bluestone Golf Course, with tee-off scheduled for 1 p.m. The price to play is $55 per person, $35 for Bluestone members. This includes golf cart, greens fees, a putting contest and lunch. There will be a 50/50 raffle, as well as basket raffles, said Williamson, each basket sporting a Chenango theme and containing items donated by local businesses, artists and more.
Once the day of golf has wrapped up, a freewill offering baked ziti dinner will be held at 6 p.m. at the golf course. Team Chenango is also looking for hole sponsors for the event, which are available for $50. In-kind donations for goodie bags are welcomed as well.
The team continues to look for additional teams to participate in the tournament, and Williamson said she’s optimistic there will be a phenomenal turnout this year. Last year, approximately 30 teams participated.
“Suicide affects a lot of people in Chenango County and we are here to help people become more aware so that, hopefully, no one will have to go through what we’ve suffered,” added Williamson.
