Oxford wins pitching duel with Greene

Baseball

Oxford 3, Greene 1
OXFORD – Oxford played error-free baseball, and winning pitcher Andrew Golden allowed a single run in the sixth inning in the Blackhawks’ victory over Greene Tuesday afternoon.
Although outhit by the Trojans, 7-5, Oxford made those hits count. Jeff Lawton, who scored two of Oxford’s runs, singled in the opening inning, stole second, and scored on Golden’s single. Lawton figured in Oxford’s tally in the third as well reaching on a walk, and eventually scoring on Richard Ryan’s single.
After Greene’s Lane Whittaker scored in the sixth on a fielder’s choice, Oxford notched a key insurance run when Matt Moore’s sacrifice fly scored Golden.
“It was a very well played high school baseball game,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Both pitchers were throwing strikes, and the only error (by Greene) was on a tough chance. Andrew did a nice job keeping their hitters off balance.”
