S-E grad Wagner helps William Smith win rowing gold
GENEVA – Karly Wagner (Sherburne-Earlville, 2012), a first-year member of the William Smith Herons’ crew team, helped her team win gold in the Women’s Novice 8 division at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship last week.
After an easy victory Saturday, Sunday’s final was a nail-biter with just 0.66 seconds separating the top three finishers. Ithaca led for most of the race, but held just a slim advantage as the teams began their final sprint. RIT and William Smith poured it on down the stretch. The Bombers were able to hold off the Tigers, with just 0.18 seconds to spare, however, the Herons were able push their bow ahead of Ithaca.
Susan Tuvell, Brianna Taylor, Grace Hutton, Megan Miskovsky, Wagner, Alex Belden, Catharine Pirie, Sammi Hurwitz, and Nikki Andrzejczyk crossed the finish line in 7:24.9, 0.48 seconds faster than the Bombers.
William Smith Head coach Sandra Chu said of the N8 boat: “I'm impressed by how they are able to continue to press themselves in practices to improve. They are a great clutch crew –handling pressure situations with ease. At 250 to go, they remained as composed as a seasoned varsity crew to get their bow across the line first.”
