Oneonta defeats Norwich boys, girls
Track and Field
Oneonta 84, Norwich 57 (boys)
Oneonta 95, Norwich 44 (girls)
NORWICH – Norwich had its standout winners, but Oneonta had ample depth in sweeping wins from the Tornado boys and girls Tuesday afternoon.
Matt Murray won all four events he entered to lead NHS. He swept the 200, 800, and 1,600 meters, and added his fourth win in the pole vault. Murray had little time to rest with his 200-meter victory coming only minutes after taking the 800, said NHS coach Shaun Horan. “He was able to beat their best on short rest, and then he went back and outlasted their kid in the pole vault,” Horan said of Murray.
Nuri Harper took the 400 meters, Matt Burke won the long jump for the Purple, and Adrian Moses gave the host club a win in the triple jump.
Oneonta was even more impressive on the girls’ side. Morgan Hagenbuch and Brooke Bonney accounted for all five of Norwich’s victories. Hagenbuch was a triple winner taking the 100-meter hurdles, the long jump, and the triple jump. Bonney swept the two throws – the discus and shot put.
“The Oneonta girls are probably one of the best teams in Section IV this year, but we still had some pretty solid performances today,” Horan said. “Morgan is jumping really well right now. She is coming off a new school record in the hurdles, and she’s having a pretty stellar season overall.”
Norwich competes in the Oneonta Invitational Friday.
