Hancock denies Greene a fourth straight MAC title

Hancock 12, Greene 11
HANCOCK – Three-time defending MAC champion Greene was eliminated from the league playoffs Thursday as Hancock rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
After a pair of walks, Caitlin Wormuth and Lea Newman had RBI singles for the Wildcats. Wormuth and Newman would eventually score after Greene errors to give the host team the lead for good.
“We were hitting the ball like crazy early in the game,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Hancock made some great plays, and we could have had more runs. We continued to hit it pretty good until the last couple of innings. We just couldn’t put anything together in the sixth and seventh.”
Greene built a 10-3 lead after scoring six in the third and four more runs in the fourth. Kiley Schaff had a two-run triple, and Shawn Ayers added an RBI double in the third. Laura Durdon led Greene’s batters with three hits and one RBI. Maddie Brink and Katelyn Shear finished with two hits apiece.
Wormuth and Megan Smith had two hits for Hancock, who play either Afton or Deposit in the league championship game.
Greene (10-4) hosts its own tournament Friday and Saturday.

Unadilla Valley 18, Walton 12
WALTON – Unadilla Valley won for the first time this season defeating Walton Thursday.
Megan Smith drove in three runs for the Storm, who started the game with seven runs in their opening at-bat. Mariah Martin had a team-high three hits for UV, Jordan Anderson drove in two runs, and Jen Elliott along with Kristen Montenegro scored three runs apiece.
Jackie Smith pitched seven innings for the victory.

Sidney 4, Oxford 2
SIDNEY – Sidney scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie in Thursday’s victory over visiting Oxford.
Kelsey Decker’s triple scored the go-ahead run in the fourth for the Warriors, and Decker came home on an Oxford error to provide a two-run cushion.
Oxford tied the game scoring twice in the top of the fourth. Megan Golden reached on an error, and came around to score on passed balls. Jessica Frank walked and advanced to third after another Sidney error. Frank tied the game on Rachel Seiler’s RBI groundout.
Sidney’s Kailyn Gravel picked up the win striking out 10 and allowing just one Oxford hit.
Oxford plays at Greene tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Baseball

Unatego 23, Oxford 9
OTEGO – Unatego blew open its MAC playoff game with Oxford in the third inning scoring 11 runs to advance to the league championship game.
Lucas DeJoy hit a grand slam to highlight the third, and led the Spartans with five RBI. Jon Wingate added a two-run single in the third and finished 4-for-5 with five runs scored. Nick Angell had four hits and four runs scored, while Quinn Barnhart, Josh Feyerabend, and Wingate all drove in three runs.
“Unatego did a phenomenal job of making plays, and they hit the ball all night long,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Things just kind of snowballed in the second and third innings.”
Oxford’s Andrew Golden went 4-for-4, and Kevin Davis drove in two runs.

Boys' Tennis

Norwich 6, Chenango Valley 1
FENTON – Norwich improved its record to 12-1 on the season, to clinch the STAC East division title, Thursday at Chenango Valley.
Norwich again swept its three doubles matches, and won all six of its matches in straight sets. Colin Stewart, Matt Craig, and Roman Cwynar were victorious at first, second, and third singles.
“Our singles players played their dominant game again, and we want to close out the regular season with a win against Oneonta Friday,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We’re hoping to build some confidence for the championship part of our season.”

GREENE – Greene remained unbeaten on the season beating undermanned Hancock Thursday.
The Wildcats were forced to give up a forfeit in singles and doubles against the powerful Trojans.

COOPERSTOWN – Unadilla Valley won its third straight match defeating Cooperstown Thursday in a non-league matchup at Leatherstocking Country Club.
Brenon Maynard, Jared Hanslmaier, and Collin Izard occupied the top three spots for UV (4-6) shooting 44, 45, and 46 respectively. The Storm linksters host Walton Monday.

MORRIS – At Colonial Ridge Golf Club Thursday, Levi Decker shot a 2-over-par 37 for Morris in a victory over winless Oxford.
The Blackhawks’ Jake McConnell led his club shooting a season-low 45. Oxford coach David Branham noted the near hole-in-one of first-year varsity golfer Darci Herrick. Herrick stroked her tee shot on the par-three third hole rimming out the cup and finishing two inches from an ace. Herrick tapped in for her first career birdie, Branham said.
