Raymond sponsors STEM event for Greene physics students
GREENE – The Raymond Corporation hosted a group of 49 seniors from the Greene Central School Physics Department on May 8, providing educational information on careers in the manufacturing industry; the event serving as an opportunity for students to have a look at the engineering behind Raymond lift trucks.
The program - in alignment with the objectives of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Coalition Council for Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties - facilitated a forum in which students were able to get a detailed look at STEM related careers at Raymond.
While at Raymond, students were able to learn about an array of aspects regarding the manufacturing industry. The students were placed into three groups, and were able to participate in activities including hands-on experiments in the Raymond lab, informational sessions on various engineering tools, and Raymond engineer-led programs.
“From the student surveys, the students liked the back stories of the Raymond employees,” said Greene physics teacher Ethan Leet. “Each Raymond employee would introduce themselves, say where they went to college, the type of degree they earned, the places they worked before Raymond. Many stories included two year degrees, that transferred to four year schools for engineering. Some had people going back to school after working five to ten years.”
According to Leet, the students were also very interested in seeing the testing lab at Raymond. The application of physics helped to put an emphasis on the importance of science, he said.
“The students learned the message that to achieve success in life you need to embrace the fact that you need to become a life-long learner,” attested Leet. “You never stop learning new things. Keep an open mind and a willingness to learn.”
Students were also educated on the operations of a global manufacturing corporation beyond the manufacturing component. Other facets explored included human resources, marketing and sales.
High school students will visit Raymond annually through the Raymond-Greene Central High School STEM Project to foster interest in the wide range of careers in the manufacturing industry.
Leet maintained, “Programs like this help introduce students to all the career possibilities that a manufacturing company like Raymond can provide. We are so grateful to have Raymond as a resource right here in our own backyard, helping introduce students to excellent opportunities for their future.”
