OWEGO – For the third straight season, Norwich finished at the top of Section IV's Class B tennis tournament Saturday at Owego.
Led by doubles champions Zan and Colin Stewart, Norwich finished with 39 team points to tie Maine-Endwell (39 points) as co-champions. The two Stewarts, runners-up the previous two seasons, won in their third finals appearance and did not lose a set.
"This was definitely their break-through year," said Norwich coach John Stewart of his doubles champions. "They just dominated this year; no one could touch them."
Without another semifinalist in the tournament, Norwich accrued early-round points with every entry – two singles players and another doubles team – winning at least one match.
Roman Cwynar and Matt Craig won matches at singles, while seniors Danny Carson and Grant Brightman advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles before losing a tough three-setter.
"The last five years we've been coming here, we've competed hard," Coach Stewart said. "Danny and Grant's match pretty much represents how we play. They were down 5-2 in the third set, and saved nine match points to get it back to 5-5 before losing the last two games."
After Friday's opening day in which it won two matches, Stewart and Stewart downed Maine-Endwell's Stephen Pham and John Munley in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-2. It was an equally impressive finals victory as the NHS pair bested Owego's Tommy West and Matt Wieckhorst, 6-3, 6-4.
With the win, Stewart and Stewart advance to the New York State qualifier May 24-25 at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
"We didn't get the draw we wanted in the tournament, but we almost made it happen (winning the B tournament outright), Coach Stewart said. "We would have liked to have won the tournament outright instead of sharing the B title, but we were the only team in the tournament in which every player won at least one match. And to my knowledge, Zan and Colin are the first Norwich doubles team to win a Class B championship in at least 20 years."
