Norwich’s Bonney goes long, wins two Section IV titles

VESTAL – Norwich junior Brooke Bonney unleashed the best discus throw of her high school career, and went on to claim two overall Section IV State Qualifier championships, Thursday at Dick Hoover Stadium.
Since the start of practice in March, Bonney and throwing coach Tom Stoddard worked extensively on improving in the discus. This, one year after Bonney earned a trip to the state meet a year ago in the shot put. “I think Brooke realized that if she wanted to be a complete thrower, she needed to throw the shot and the disc,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. “She became more and more aggressive in the circle, and she is so strong and athletic. I think it was just a matter of time before she got a hold of one and let it rip.”
Bonney had two 120-foot-plus throws, the longest measuring 122-feet, four-inches to break the school record of 117-11 set by Nicki Persons two decades ago. Bonney finished her daily double winning the shot with a toss of 36-10.
Also winning a championship was B-G/Afton sophomore Julia Knapp. Knapp, a three-time New York State meet participant, upended defending sectional champion Kathy Cadet of Union-Endicott for her first overall title. She won the race in a personal-best 15.2 seconds, and the victory came just a short while after she participated on a the school-record-breaking 400-meter relay. Not only that, it was the first win for Knapp over Cadet. “She had already met the state qualifying standard (before the meet), so the first thing was to just get through the race,” said B-G/Afton coach Israel Lorimer. “She just ran a great race in the finals.”
Elsewhere, Norwich’s Matt Murray returns to the state meet, this time in the 800 meters after placing third in 1:58. That finished matched his third overall finish – second in Division II – in the 1,600 meters in which he ran a personal-best 4:28.
The 800 final came approximately one hour after the 1,600, and after a tough first lap in which he was boxed in, Murray was unable to come from behind. Placing fourth was Murray’s teammate Nuri Harper, who timed 2:01. “I think running the 1,600 wiped Matt out,” Horan said. “When he came off the final turn (in the 800), I don’t think he had enough gas. But I think he is content, and it will be nice to have him run an 800 fresh (at states), and not have another race within the hour.”
G-MU/Morris’ Eddie Ray Cotton won the division two championship in the 100 meters, and was third overall to advance to state meet next weekend at Middletown High School. Cotton timed 11.2 seconds.
Elsewhere, Greene’s Jeremy Flohr was second overall in the 400 meters, and posted the best time in division two clocking 51.37 seconds. B-G/Afton’s Pedro Aparicio was the top division two finisher in the shot put throwing it 46-9 3/4. Aparicio was third among all Section IV competitors in the event.

State Tennis Tournament
FLUSHING – Norwich sophomores Zan and Colin Stewart lost in the opening round of the state doubles tournament at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing.
The Stewarts, third in last week’s Section IV state qualifier, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 final to the number eight-seeded team. Names of the opponents were not available. “There were probably two points that separated the two teams in the first set,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We held up well, and I’m proud of the boys. We showed that we can compete with some the best guys in the state.”
The Norwich doubles team returns to action today in the consolation round.
