Norwich netters lose nail-biter

NEW YORK – Norwich sophomores Zan Stewart and Colin Stewart didn’t go quietly in their first-round consolation bracket match, Friday at the New York State Tennis Championships held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Coming off a hard-fought, first-round loss on Thursday to the number eight seed, the Tornado duo took Section VI champions August Bruno and Tommy Baldinger of Orchard Park to three sets.
Bruno and Baldinger rallied from a first-set loss to the Stewarts and survived a match point in the third set to down the Tornado tandem, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 11-9. “It was a great match, and we played even better than we did on Thursday,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “It was exciting tennis and a great experience. With the right draw, we proved that we can really compete with the best in the state.”
