FURY hosting fast-pitch tournament this weekend
NORWICH – The FURY, an ASA-sanctioned travel softball team, will be hosting a 16-and-under tournament this Saturday and Sunday at Norwich High School.
Teams from Cortland, Owego, Elmira Heights, and Syracuse will participate along with FURY 16- and 14-and-under teams. Each registered team is also bringing non-perishable food items to donate to the local Roots and Wings organization, said tournament director and FURY co-head coach, Rick Condon.
Condon said that the FURY has three teams, 12U, 14U, and 16U, that will participate in tournaments this summer in Syracuse, Glens Fall Falls, Binghamton, Horseheads, the 16U state championship, and nationals in LaPlata, Md. “The expense to travel and play on elite travel teams is too much for many families,” Condon said. “The FURY softball program is a great way to help area softball become more competitive, and it is truly a cost-effective alternative to more expensive travel programs who charge top dollars to play at the same tournaments and get similar instruction. The love of the sport should be what drives a player to compete and work at sharpening their skills. And coaching is the steering wheel that turns the player in the direction they need to go.”
Approximately half of the 16U team includes players who attend Chenango County schools.
