Donna Frech School of Dance presents 38th annual end-of-year recital

NORWICH – The Donna Frech School of Dance (DFSD), 7-9 Berry Street in Norwich, will present its 38th annual recital, “Take It To The Limit,” this weekend. Evening performances will take place at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, with a matinee performances set for 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Norwich High School auditorium.
The DFSD was established in 1975 and is the area’s longest continually run dance studio. With three locations - Norwich, New Berlin and Sidney - and dancers ranging from small children to adults, the annual recital offers something for everyone, according to dance instructor Donna Frech.
The performances consist of traditional and innovative forms of the art of dance: tap, ballet, jazz, acrobatics, lyrical, modern/contemporary, musical theater and hip hop.
According to Frech, many audience members who attend every year do not have family members in the performance. Said one faithful attendee, “The performance is so enjoyable to watch, it’s very entertaining, and there’s something different throughout the performance.”
“This year’s performances are the culmination of a dance year filled with hard work, discipline, fun and dreams,” stated Frech, who added that the choreography, music, costumes and entire concept will make an audience member feel as though they’re watching a professional touring company.
In addition, many of the dancers with DFSD are members of award winning dance groups.
“The year-end recital is a wonderful experience,” said Frech. “This is especially true for the younger students, who have learned that they can have fun while learning to dance.”
The matinee performance exhibits the talents of the younger students. While some may just be starting out in their dance training, Frech said it is apparent the tiny performers thoroughly enjoy what they are doing. The performances accompanying songs such as “Broadway Baby,” “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” and “Pineapple Princess” will compliment the dancing of the younger generation of performers.
Said Frech, “The younger students are amazing to watch on stage. The real tiny ones are just so cute. It is so gratifying to know that we have been able to offer them a little glance into the world of performing arts. I love the little ones, they are such a joy to teach. It is so rewarding to see young students progress through the years and become beautiful dancers.”
Further down the road, said Frech, these young dancers can opt to enroll in a more intense dance program at the dance school. Throughout the last 38 years, many students have passed through the DFSD doors, she said, and many of her students have gone on to become dance teachers and studio owners themselves. Frech proudly stated several of the students in this weekend’s performances are the children of students who have studied with the DFSD.
The cast of the senior performances - or evening shows - is made up of a variety of dancers, some of whom have been dancing for 15 years and some who are younger, performing in the evening show for the first time. According to Frech, all the dancers - whether it’s the intensive study student who attends class four or five times a week or the recreational student attending class once or twice a week - come together with a strong commitment to present the year-end performance and have fun.
“There are several classes of adults who have enjoyed taking to the stage each year, and wouldn’t miss the excitement of it all,” commented Frech. “Of course, there is some comic relief too - you’ll just have to see it to believe it.”
The shows will open with the DFSD company dancers’ performance of their production number titled “Newsies.”
DFSD instructors Donna Frech, Kathleen Cragle Breanne Krucher, Kristen Miller, Kayla Stage and Andrea Wilson extend their open invitation to the public to attend the weekend of dance.
“All have worked collectively to present such a diverse collage of dance performance. A special thank you to parents, family and friends behind the scenes who have made it possible to present such wonderful performances,” said Frech.
Tickets are available at the Donna Frech School of Dance, Service Pharmacy in Norwich, New Berlin and Sherburne, Bartles Pharmacy in Oxford, Video Entertainment in Sidney, and at the door prior to each performance. All seats are $10.
