Oxford’s Community Band set to kick-off summer season
OXFORD – The Oxford Community Band is currently seeking interested musicians of various experience levels and will hold its first practice of the summer concert season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Oxford High School band room.
According to Treasurer Tom Rice, the Oxford Community Band has been established and providing entertainment for community residents for more than 35 years.
Said Rice, “Whether to play for the full summer concert session or for just one performance, everyone is welcome to sit in.”
Thirty musicians on average sit in at each performance - all with varying levels of experience with music.
Rice added, “Even if you haven’t played in years, the only requirement is to enjoy sharing music with friends and neighbors.”
The band performs various styles of music including marches, Broadway show tunes, movie scores, new music, older music and “everything in between,” said Rice.
The objective of the Oxford Community Band is to have fun through music alongside fellow area residents interested in performing, and to provide the audience with an hour of pleasurable music.
Wednesday’s practice is the first of two slated to take place at the Oxford High School. The second practice will be held at 7:30 p.m. July 10.
Performances this summer will be held on Thursday nights beginning July 11. The first three weeks of shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. in LaFayette Park. A performance at 7 p.m. August 1 will take place at Washington Park and Bida’s. There will also be a show at 7 p.m. August 8 at the Oxford Historical Society.
“It doesn’t matter if you can make just one or only a few of the concerts,” said Rice, “You’re still appreciated.”
A special event has been added in Guilford this summer season - a Saturday evening in mid-August - a welcomed addition according to Rice.
Each musician who attends a practice or concert will receive a small stipend, something the Oxford Community Band has been doing for years.
The band is also looking for assistance with setting up chairs, music stands and drums. The equipment is picked up at the Oxford High School approximately a half hour before show time.
Any interested musicians are welcome to show up at the high school Wednesday evening to sit in on the first practice.
