S-E fourth grade teacher remains in serious condition following van versus truck accident Wednesday

SMITHFIELD – The driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Van, owned by the Sherburne-Earlville School District, remains in serious condition as of Thursday morning following a two-car accident that occurred early Wednesday morning in Madison County.
According to New York State Police stationed in Oneida, nine individuals – including six teachers from the Sherburne-Earlville school district – were injured in the accident which occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m. at the intersection of Swamp Road and Fearon Road in the Town of Smithfield.
State police say that the S-E owned van was traveling westbound on Fearon Road when the driver failed to yield the right of way to a Department of Transportation dump truck traveling north on Swamp road. The DOT Truck subsequently struck the van on the diver’s side with sufficient force to cause both of the vehicles to leave the road via the west side shoulder, at which point both cars overturned in a field.
Emergency responders were forced to cut off the roof of the van in order to extract the occupants. The van’s driver, Austin R. Mullen, 43, was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Upstate Medical were she remains in serious condition, according to a hospital official. Keeley A. Fenton, 35, a passenger in the S-E van, was also transported to Upstate Medical with head injuries, but is currently listed in fair condition. The other four passengers of the van were transported to various hospitals in the area: Jennifer Howard, 40, transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with leg injuries; Clifford E. Thomas, 50, transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with back injuries; Kathleen L. O’Connor, 52, transported to Upstate Medical with facial injuries; Sue Ellen Westbrook, 52, also transported to Upstate Medical with head injuries, since released.
The three individuals in the DOT truck were also transported to various hospitals in the area. The driver, Timothy A. Smith, 47, transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Madison with minor injuries. The two passengers in the DOT truck: Brenda L. Spaulding, 51, and Daniel E. Stetson, 54, were transported to Crouse-Irving Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital in Madison, respectively, both with minor injuries.
The van containing the S-E staff members was on its way to a teacher training conference in the Syracuse area. Mullen has been issued a ticket for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign by police.
