Final preparations underway for 38th annual Lobster Fest
NORWICH – The Chenango County Republican Committee is making final preparations for an evening where politics and seafood combine as the 38th annual Lobster Fest fundraiser gets underway.
Lobster Fest this year will be held from noon to 4 p.m., July 21, at the Canasawacta Country Club, located at 261 County Road 44 in the Town of Norwich.
Long hailed as the most “non-political” political event of the year, Lobster Fest typically draws hundreds of attendees, including dozens of government officials from the state and local levels, said Committee Chair Tom Morrone.
This year’s guest list includes Congressman Richard Hanna, representative for New York’s 22nd Congressional District; Assemblyman Clifford Crouch; Assemblyman Peter Lopez; Assemblyman Gary Finch; and New York State Senators Tom Libous and James Seward.
In past years, the event has also brought out several Chenango County bureaucrats including County Judge Frank Revoir Jr., District Attorney Joseph McBride, Chairman of the Chenango County Board of Supervisors Lawrence Wilcox, and Norwich City Mayor Joseph Maiurano.
“It’s always a pretty good turnout. This is the 38th year of Lobster Fest and I still hold that it’s the best social non-political event in the county,” Morrone said. “And it is a great chance for people to meet their political leaders.”
Last year’s big election year saw more than 400 people to Lobster Fest to support the committee and while 2013 may not be a big election year, Morrone said there will still be a place setting for just as many.
The event, initiated in the mid-1970s by Clarence “Rapp” Rappleyea as a social gathering, now serves as the only fundraising event of the year for the Chenango Republican Committee. Morrone, the longest running party chairman in the state, also noted that Lobster Fest doesn’t just draw area Republicans, but rather people of every political affiliation from all over the region. It’s a chance to rub elbows with legislators and casually discuss the pressing issues of today, he added.
“The nice thing is we’ve always felt confident that this is the kind of fundraiser where it doesn’t matter what party you are affiliated with or what side of the aisle,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to come and meet your supervisors, neighborhood politicians and state representatives.”
Tickets for Lobster Fest are $60 per plate and can be purchased through Christman Motors, Chiarino Insurance, or Myrna Wessels in Norwich, and from Mayor William Acee in Sherburne. More information is available by calling Morrone at 334-3234.
