Chenango Blues Association welcomes Eric Lindell and The Sunliners, and a very special guest, to the East Park stage
NORWICH – The Chenango Blues Association’s Summer Concert Series is in full-swing with Eric Lindell and The Sunliners – and special guest Anson Funderburgh – performing at 7 p.m. tonight on the East Park stage in downtown Norwich.
Eric Lindell is no stranger to performing in Norwich, and said he is very excited to be back for this show.
“I love playing in Norwich,” he said. “When I come up there everything is just so beautiful - the countryside, the people. It’s been a couple of years, so we’re really looking forward to this.”
Lindell first appeared at the Chenango Blues Festival in 2007, and has been a favorite of both festival organizers and fans alike ever since. He is known for his soulful vocal delivery, skills on the guitar, songwriting, and riveting (and energetic) live show.
Chenango Blues Association Board President Eric Larsen said Lindell’s performances are always a favorite and it’s a show he is really looking forward to.
Lindell is currently touring with The Sunliners, and attendees of tonight’s show will have the opportunity to witness a special performance – the addition of guest guitarist Anson Funderburgh.
“Anson’s been jumping in here and there all along our tour,” said Lindell, who added, “He’ll be with us in Norwich (and for about a week after) and that will be a lot of fun.”
Anson Funderburgh – renowned American blues guitar player incorporating both Texas and Chicago blues – has been a part of the blues scene since the 1970s. Hailing from the Dallas, Tex. area, he formed Anson Funderburgh and The Rockets in 1978 and recorded with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on their third album, Butt Rockin’. Funderburgh’s first album, Talk to You by Hand was released in 1981. The Rockets’ releases regularly featured well-known bluesman Sam Myers up until his death in 2006 [Editor’s Note: Myers borrowed my trusty old Fender Twin Reverb amp for the first-ever Chenango Blues Fest more than 20 years ago].
The cadre of musicians supporting Lindell and Funderburgh for tonight’s performance – The Sunliners – all bring their skills and talent to the stage, contributing to a live performance that’s been hailed by critics as both powerful and inspirational.
“We’re really looking forward to this performance,” said Larsen. “It’s not something they do often – have the opportunity to play together – so it should be great.”
Larsen added Lindell and Funderburgh compliment each other very well, and it’s a show many will want to get to the park to see.
As a critic puts it, "Eric Lindell has turned heads everywhere he's gone, almost instantly becoming the talk of the town wherever his musical journey has taken him."
Said Lindell, “People just always have said afterward, ‘Man, it’s just so real sounding,’ and that’s what we strive to do.” He added that the live performance tonight will offer something everyone can relate to, and he thinks that’s why people come out.
“Norwich is just a really beautiful place,” Lindell added. “Everyone on the committee, Eric Larsen, the people – they are so hospitable. And the countryside – that is just amazing. I’m looking forward to coming back.”
Lindell added there will be merchandise for sale at the show, including CDs and t-shirts.
His most recent release, Sunday Morning, can also be ordered online, said Lindell. The album – Eric Lindell and The Sunliners featuring Anson Funderburgh – is a collection of Lindell’s favorite cuts by artists including Billy Preston, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ronnie Milsap and Earnest Tub.
“The weather is supposed to be great,” said Larsen, adding folks won’t want to miss this show, and he urged everyone to bring a chair and a friend along for the performance.
In the rare event of inclement weather, the show will relocate to the Chenango Arts Council stage, 27 West Main Street, Norwich.
Gratitude was extended by the Blues Association to NBT Bank for its generosity in sponsoring the Summer Concert Series.
“You know,” said Lindell jovially, “We’re just up there keeping it real – three chords and the truth. People dig that.”
