Parents brace yourselves: the new school year approaches

CHENANGO COUNTY – With the new school year fast approaching, parents and students alike are rapidly running out of time to prepare.
For parents, getting ready for their child’s return to school can be a stressful and a potentially costly period of time. On top of the monetary hassle of preparing for the new school year, children are often less than compliant in the process.
One way to ease the transition from the relaxed and undemanding lifestyle of summertime back into the rigors of education is to start preparing early. Taking care of the necessities, such as purchasing school supplies and updating immunizations early on are a must, say educators. However, it may also prove beneficial to ease children back into the school mindset on a physiological level earlier on.
Educators recommend that parents address the sleep cycles of soon-to-be students. Many kids develop different sleeping habits over the summer months which can prove detrimental to their education as well as burdensome on families when they “miss the bus.” The best way to avoid lack of sleep induced issues, they say, is to start getting children up earlier and earlier as the new school year draws near.
August is a month of infamy in the history of American parents’ wallets as it is traditionally known as the month of school supply purchases. In conjunction with parents gearing their children up to be educated, many stores offer back to school sales. Although many sates participate in sales tax holidays with back-to-school in mind, New York is unfortunately not one of them.
Some Chenango County schools, such as Sherburne-Earlville, are already providing parents with electronic lists specifying what supplies each grade level will need for the upcoming school year.
Parents are also encouraged to update their children’s immunizations and pursue doctor check-ups before they return the kids to school. In New York State, there are required vaccinations which children must have updated before the start of the school year. Students who will be attending day care, head start, or K-12 must be up to date with the Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis vaccine, as well as Hepatitis B, and Polio. Some schools do require written documentation of vaccinations before the school year begins and parents should contact both their school districts and their children’s doctors to make sure everything is in order.
