Leatherstocking District Pipe Band to play final summer series show at New Berlin Library
NEW BERLIN – The Leatherstocking District Pipe Band will offer up the final performance of the Ruso and Jean Perkins Memorial Concert series, the show slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New Berlin Library, 15 South Main Street.
Harpist Martha Gallagher, classical guitarist Peter Fletcher and folk musician Nan Hoffman have all brought their talents to the library in previous weeks, and hopes are high the final show will have a solid turnout.
The Leatherstocking District Pipe Band (LDPB) is a Grade 5 pipe band based out of Oneonta. A Grade 5 band participates in various Eastern United States Pipe Band Association competitions and local community events. The LDPB performs at parades, school functions, and private events.
The pipe major is Stephan Scanlan-Yerly, an Illinois native who has been bagpiping since he was twelve years old. He attended Monmouth College on a full tuition scholarship for bagpiping. Scanlan-Yerly later played with the City of Washington Pipe Band in Washington, DC., before relocating to Oneonta in 2010.
Said Scanlan-Yerly, “Our band members come from all walks of life and many areas of New York, including the Catskills, the Central Leatherstocking area and the Capital District. We offer quality instruction to bagpipers and drummers of all skill levels, and welcome new students throughout the year.”
In addition to the performance at the library, the LDPB has upcoming shows scheduled for the Capitol District Scottish games, Hartwick College Football games, the Greene Applefest, and the Oneonta Halloween parade.
The show is free and open to the public and all are encouraged to attend this final summer library performance. Attendees will also be able to learn the history of the bagpipes from members of the LDPB.
The four-part series has spanned the summer, and according to library director Darlene LaBrie the concerts have been sponsored by Andrea Miller and Donald Perkins, children of Ruso and Jean.
