Participants, volunteers sought for 6th annual 5K Road Race in Greene

GREENE –The 94th annual Labor Day Picnic in Greene is fast approaching, one of the longest-standing festivals in Chenango County. And with festivities set for Labor Day - Monday, Sept. 2 - both participants and volunteers are being requested for the 6th annual 5K Road Race.
The 5K is slated for 9 a.m. at the Greene Lions Club park. The race is sponsored by the Greene Labor Day Picnic Association.
The race and walk is held on a course officially certified by USA Track and Field, said organizer Steve Page. The course is a wheel-measured five kilometer (3.1 mile) road race.
The course will start and finish near the large pavilion at the Greene Lions Club park and a map will be affixed to the wall of the pavilion so participants and bystanders can have easy access. According to Page, each mile and the turnaround location will be clearly marked along the course.
“For those who have preregistered, they will be guaranteed a Greene Labor Day 5K 2013 race t-shirt,” added Page. “This race is for both runners and walkers. In past races, many of the walkers will buddy-up during the walk.”
Registration the day of the race will take place from 8 to 8:45 a.m. at the pavilion and the price is $17 per runner. If not pre-registered, t-shirts are not guaranteed as the number available is limited. Ample parking and restrooms are available, as well.
Page added last year's event had 169 finishers. The entry fee for the race entitles the participant with a $5 food certificate for use at the Ball Flats. A plethora of post-race refreshments will be also be available.
Trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall male and female finishers. Additionally, there are awards for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for the males and females in each age group. Each trophy for 1st and 2nd place in the age group categories will be individualized; with the corresponding age group engraved on the award.
The various age groups include: 15 and under, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 – 69, and 70 and older. Those under the age of 18 require parental permission when registering.
The results of the race will be posted on the Triple Cities Runners Club website.
“Chad Noelle from Greene holds the male record with a time of 16:43,” said Page, who added Yvonne McKeon from Binghamton holds the female record with a time of 19:36.
Volunteers are needed to help the day of the race with the finish line and road marshals, and those interested can contact Steve Page and 656-8090 or spage@stny.rr.com.
Prospective participants can pick up a registration form at the Town of Greene clerk's office, contact Page, or download the form from triplecitiesrunnersclub.org.
Rides, food, and entertainment will be held at the Ball Flats for the remainder of the day following the race.
A complete schedule of events on the 94th annual Greene Labor Day Picnic celebration will be printed in an upcoming edition of The Evening Sun.
