Owls of New York
SHERBURNE – The Chenango Bird Club presents “Owls of New York” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Rogers Environmental Education Center’s Bird Cabin.
10 species of owls are either year-round residents, regular visitors or visit New York State occasionally. We’ll take a look at taxidermic mounts from the George Lesser Collection and anatomical specimens housed at Rogers Center to learn about these fascinating creatures.
Former Rogers Center Program Director and longtime birder, Fred von Mechow, will present the program. Fred will demonstrate the various owls’ calls and show several examples of how owls are special among birds.
The Chenango Bird Club will conduct a short business meeting at 6:30 p.m., before Fred’s presentation. Refreshments will be served after Fred’s presentation. Everyone is welcome to attend all or part of the evening’s activities.
The Chenango Bird Club presents monthly programs (except January, February, and March). Nature enthusiasts of all levels and interests are invited to all Chenango Bird Club programs, free of charge. Rogers Center is located one mile west of Sherburne Village on State Highway 80. Park in the main parking lot and walk to the west end of the lot to the Bird Exhibit Cabin.
Call Club President, Charlene LaFever at 334-9112, for more information on Chenango Bird Club activities.
Halupki and Pierogi Dinner at the Oxford Legion
OXFORD – The Oxford American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) of Fort Hill Post #376 is getting festive with a European dinner of Halupki and Pierogi. The dinner will be on Saturday, October 5, from 5 to 7 p.m., with take-outs only from 4 to 5 p.m. Community members are invited to have a delicious hearty, home cooked meal and support the educational and charitable mission of the Oxford A.L. Auxiliary.
So many different people of European origins, especially German/Polish/Slavic/Russian make stuffed cabbage rolls, or Halupki, it’s a comfort food classic. Halupki are made of rice and beef, wrapped in cabbage leaves, baked in a thin tomato sauce. Sure each family has their own variations, but all will agree they’re delicious. Pierogies (stuffed potato dumplings), will be sautéed with onions as the perfect compliment to the Halupki. Add to that some string beans and you’ve got a well balanced, satisfying meal, but that’s not all. To finish the dinner on a sweet note, diners will have their choice of cakes – white with vanilla frosting or German chocolate cake with coconut frosting.
Prices listed for the Halupki dinner are just $7 for adults; $6 for seniors; children, aged 6 to 12, are $5; and under age 5 are free. Take-outs: $7.50.
The Oxford ALA is involved in youth activities such as the Oratorical Contest and Girls' State. They volunteer at nursing homes, food and clothing banks, and they organize fundraisers like the (mostly) annual Great Garage Sale Day & Bake Sale, Memorial Poppy sales, and others. They promote child literacy and education with their Harvest dinner (coming Fri., Oct. 25); donate community gift “baskets”, and to the Volunteer Services of the NYS Veterans' Home at Oxford. It is all accomplished with volunteers!
The historic Fort Hill Post #376 is located at 17 S. Washington Avenue. For inquiries, contact Jeanie Petersen, at Events@OxfordNY.com or call 843-2121, or call the American Legion at 843-8166.
