Monday Evening Musical Club to present 'Pianos Plural'
OXFORD – The Monday Evening Musical Club’s rich tradition of providing outstanding free concerts for the public continues as they present their first concert of the season on Monday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Norwich.
“Pianos Plural” will be an exciting evening of music played on two pianos by five of the area’s most outstanding pianists and two advanced students. Each piece will be performed by four, eight, or ten hands.
The performers who have worked tirelessly over the past several months preparing include Anne Franco, Anita Humer, Catherine Hammons, Patricia Houghton, Rosemary Jaytanie, and students Nicholas Deady and Jason Handy. Nicholas is a fifth grade student at Perry Browne Elementary School and Jason is a Norwich High School senior who has just returned from a year of study in Germany with the Rotary Exchange program. They will feature works by Mozart, Schubert, Grieg, Ravel and John Philip Sousa among others. The program will open with a piece from Mozart’s comic opera, "The Marriage of Figaro," and will close with a rousing rendition of Sousa’s "Stars and Stripes Forever." The remaining pieces range from classical to even “a touch of jazz.”
The public is cordially invited to attend this concert, which will be dedicated to the four women who originally performed and made this concert format a popular tradition many years ago. They were Gail Cooney, Virginia Helton, the late Martha Jacobi, and Vivian Wu.
A reception will follow the program and a voluntary free will donation will be accepted to benefit the MEMC Scholarship Fund.
