Sherburne-Earlville 25, Holland Patent 12
HOLLAND PATENT – State-ranked Sherburne-Earlville moved one step closer to a second straight Section III, Class C playoff berth beating Holland Patent on the road Saturday afternoon.
S-E quarterback Cody Marango threw three touchdown passes to senior Austin Jasper, and Julienne Alsheimer added a key one-yard TD run in the fourth to create a two-touchdown advantage.
Holland Patent became the first team to score more than one touchdown against S-E this season – both on passes – and the second one closed the gap to 19-12 in the third quarter. “Holland Patent is a team that could have easily been 3-1 coming into the game, and after scouting them, we felt this could be a dangerous game,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “That’s the way it played out.”
Marango completed eight passes, all of them to Jasper. The prolific duo connected on scoring tosses of 21 and 10 yards in the first half to give S-E a 13-6 lead.
On the final score, Jasper caught a short toss from Marango, broke two tackles, and outraced the Holland Patent secondary to the endzone for 65-yard scoring play. “We like to spread things around on offense, but we wanted to give Cody some confidence, and Cody has confidence throwing the ball to Austin,” Jasper said. “Austin turned a couple short passes into some big gains.”
S-E backs Brady Sopchak, Alsheimer, and Brodie Roebuck softened the Holland Patent defense with Sopchak finishing with 107 yards, Alsheimer 62, and Roebuck 51. Overall, the Marauders had 427 yards of total offense. “We’re happy to be in control of our playoff destiny, but nothing is done yet,” Jasper said.
S-E hosts Utica Notre Dame Friday.

GREENE – Chenango Valley held Greene to 25 yards of total offense, and Bryan Pert had two TD runs for the Warriors in handing the Trojans their third straight defeat on Friday.
CV needed just three plays to cover 70 yards on its opening drive of the game with Aaron Trumino dashing 36 yards for the touchdown. Pert ran 24 yards for the first of his touchdowns, and he added a one-yard TD run to start the third.
“They had a matchup advantage up front, especially with their size, and they were able to maximize those advantages,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton of the Warriors. “Their offensive and defensive lines put us in some bad spots. We missed some assignments and did not execute.”
CV ran for 335 yards in the game in building a 35-0 lead after three quarters. Greene’s lone TD came in the fourth when Tristan Carter scored on an eight-yard run. “One of the positives I saw is that the younger players continued to play hard, and didn’t let the score detract from their effort,” Gorton said.
