Tornado linksters narrowly miss three-peat

OWEGO - Norwich came within five strokes of three-peating as Section IV, Class B champions.
The Tornado linksters placed second behind STAC division champion Windsor, Tuesday afternoon at The Links at Hiawatha Landing.
Led by freshman Ryan Johnson's 75, the second-best overall score of the day, Norwich continued to surprise head coach Bob Branham. "The kids did great, and when the scores were coming in, I thought we might actually pull it out," the NHS mentor said. "With this group of young kids, a 417 (team score) is superb."
Johnson was red-hot out of the gate birdieing six of his first 11 holes. His three-over-par score was one shot behind overall medalist - and fellow freshman - D.J. Griffiths of Susquehanna Valley.
Corey Johnson was next for the Purple shooting an 80, Nate Scheer had an 85, Colin Fern, in his first varsity appearance, shot an 87, and Greg Todd carded a 90.
Norwich hosts Johnson City on Thursday in its next-to-last match of the season.

GREENE – Unadilla Valley defeated Greene for the second time in less than a week scoring the game-winner in the first overtime Tuesday.
Taylor Davis scored the decisive goal 6:41 into the first extra period after a crossing pass.
Greene led early when Paige Wilcox scored at the eight-minute mark of the first half. UV tied it with 5:15 left in the first half on Sierra Badger's unassisted goal.
"We definitely had our scoring opportunities, and we tried everything," said Greene coach Brandy Stone. "It's one of those games where we worked really hard, but things just didn't go our way."
Greene plays at Bainbridge-Guilford Thursday.

NORWICH – Unatego scored the game-winning goal with just under 20 minutes to play to beat upstart Norwich on Tuesday.
Norwich rallied twice in the second half to tie the game. After Unatego took the lead early in the second half, Alyssa Welch tied the game at 2-2. A few minutes later, the Spartans regained the advantage only to see the Tornado's Angel Audette put away a crossing pass to knot the game once more.
"We came back with everything we had, we just couldn't finish in the end," said Norwich coach Felicia Tynan.
Norwich received a first-half goal from Hunter Hagenbuch.

"We played much better in the second half and got some shots off," said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle, "Now it's just about finishing."
Oxford plays at Edmeston today.

"I didn't feel like they totally dominated us, and there were times we were right there and didn't get shots off," said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. "We did a good job of moving the ball, and it was a good experience to play on turf."

Megan Komendarek and Vanessa Salerno had six kills apiece for the Tornado (6-5), and Norwich finished with 24 kills overall, said NHS coach Shelly Alger.
Logann Dolan and Courtney Scheer had four aces apiece, Dolan and Caitlyn Brown paced the setters with five assists each, while Lauren Laughlin charted five digs and Jacasa Currie had four.

OXFORD - Oxford won the final two games to rally past visiting Hancock Tuesday, 25-17, 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17.

WINDSOR - At Windsor Tuesday in a three-way meet that also included Chenango Valley, Norwich fell by one point to the Warriors, 28-29, that despite one-two finishes from Robert Jeffrey and Frank Garcia.
Jeffrey completed the 3.1-mile course in 18:38, and Garcia was second in 18:51. Matt Murray placed fifth (19:09), Connor Nichols was 14th (21:02), and Marcus Dodd took 15th overall in 21:03.
The Tornado girls had just four runners on the line and was incomplete in team scoring. Martha Clemens again led NHS clocking 23:11 to finish fourth overall.
