Greene captures 5th straight MAC title

Boys' Soccer

Greene 2, Walton 1
WALTON – Winning never gets old, and the Trojans completed a perfect regular season in the MAC championship game Friday at Walton High School.
Greene (16-0) scored once in each half, and withstood Walton's late-game push to reign atop the league for a fifth straight season.
"It was a very physical game, and Walton to play and played us real hard," said Greene coach Rick Tallman. "They had nice game plan to try and knock us off."
Walton's strategy was focused toward slowing Greene's possession game, while also loading up players in the defensive zone. That limited Greene's offensive scoring chances to quick transition plays, and that was precisely what led to the opening goal.
Luke Day pushed the ball up the right side and hit Brian Leone on a lead pass, who split the Walton defense on his run to the ball. Leone, in just his second game back after missing most of the season with an injury, scored with nine minutes left in the first half.
Day pushed the lead to two goals with 15 minutes left in the game scoring unassisted.
Walton's Cameron Murphy answered on a penalty kick with 9:55 left following a whistled handball. That was Walton’s last great scoring chance, though, as the Trojans finished off the win.
The Trojans enter sectional play with their first unbeaten mark under Tallman, and are the second seed in the Class C playoffs behind state-ranked Lansing. "Being undefeated is nice, but the real test begins this week," Tallman said.
