Whitney Point blanks Greene, 16-0
GREENE – Whitney Point brought Greene’s streak of eight straight winning seasons to a close Friday night.
The Golden Eagles limited Greene to just 32 rushing yards, and handed the Trojans their fifth straight defeat, 16-0, on homecoming weekend.
Whitney Point, limited to 57 yards of total offense in the first half, came alive behind speedy senor running back Donovan Sturdevant. Sturdevant’s elusiveness came into play in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, when he ran for 56 of his game-high 88 yards.
“Sturdevant is a heck of a back, and he hurt us in the second half,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “He was able to break some runs on cutbacks, and that was due to some lack of discipline. That’s a product of us being young – you just don’t quite do your job on every play.”
Little-used back Nicholas Hust started the Eagles’ first scoring drive in the third taking an option pitch from quarterback Mitch Edson 17 yards into Greene territory. Edson connected with burly tight end Gabe Schrauger on a 15-yard pass over the middle to the Greene 20, and on a fourth-and-seven, Edson hit Andrew Gardner on a 17-yard TD pass. Gardner outjumped a Greene defender, and touched down just inside the right pylon. An Edson scamper for the two-point conversion gave Point an eight-point advantage.
Whitney Point shook off an ill-timed penalty to score an insurance touchdown. Sturdevant weaved his way through the Greene defense for an 86-yard punt return score that was wiped away. Taking over at their 31, the Eagles used seven plays for the insurance score. Sturdevant ripped off a 35-yard run that was aided by a Greene personal foul penalty to give Whitney Point possession at the Trojans’ 11. Jake Lynch did the rest scoring two plays later on a 10-yard dash to the right corner of the endzone with 10:11 left in the game.
Greene moved for two first downs in the fourth behind the passing of sophomore Josh Harrington. Harrington connected with big pass plays to Wyatt Johns and Joe Beckwith, but the drive ended when Sturdevant picked off a Harrington throw at the 10.
The Trojans’ only other significant offensive threat came late in the first half when it advanced to the Whitney Point 27. That drive, too, ended in a turnover when Greene fumbled the ball away, one of four turnovers in the game.
“We would move for some first downs, but had some mistakes where we picked up a penalty, dropped a snap, and we had those turnovers,” Gorton said. “I felt we had an excellent chance to score in the first half, and when we didn’t, that really hurt us.”
Greene (2-5) is scheduled to host Trumansburg (1-6) on Friday.
