Marauders improve to 7-0, host playoff game Friday
Football
Sherburne-Earlville 34, Clinton 8
CLINTON – Sherburne-Earlville went to the air to soften up Clinton's defense, and proceeded to finish off an unbeaten regular season Saturday afternoon.
S-E junior quarterback Cody Marango threw three second-quarter touchdown passes, and added a fourth TD toss in the third quarter to finish 10-for-16 for 211 yards.
The Marauders offense stalled in the first quarter as Clinton stacked the line of scrimmage to slow the ground game. "They were sending the house to slow down our running game, so we switched it up with some play-action passing," said S-E head coach Mike Jasper, whose club is off to its first 7-0 start since joining Section III 11 years ago.
Marango threw scoring tosses of 36 and three yards to Ben Khoury, and his third – a 23-yarder – went to sophomore tight end Gavin Giroux.
Khoury completed a three-TD day hauling in a 34-yard strike from Marango in the third, and backup running back Gavin Paul finished up S-E’s scoring on a three-yard scoring plunge. Clinton avoided the shutout with a late touchdown run.
"My biggest fear coming in was that we would be a little flat, and we did that," Jasper said. "It was one of the longest weeks of practice we've ever had, We just wanted to get through this game and stay healthy, and we were able to do that."
S-E, Watertown IHC, and Syracuse IT all sport 7-0 marks in Section III's Class C, and a coin flip determined the first, second, and third seeds, Jasper said. Regardless, Marauders will host Thousand Islands Friday at 7 p.m. "We're happy to have a home game, and we'll be playing on grass," Jasper said, who noted potential opponents General Brown and Skaneateles have field turf home surfaces. "We'll take any advantage we can get."

Harpursvillle 47, Oxford 22
OXFORD – Harpursville, headed toward the playoffs a second straight season, capitalized on early Oxford turnovers to beat the Blackhawks on Friday evening.
Harpursville picked off three Oxford passes, all of which led to scores on the other end to open a 29-0 lead at the break. A fourth interception in the fourth quarter went 98 yards for a touchdown.
“We had a lot of turnovers in the game (six), and you’re not going to win too many games with that many,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton.
Harpursville quarterback Devon Dean threw three TD passes and added two TD runs as the Hornets’ offense racked up 445 total yards.
Oxford countered with three fourth-quarter touchdowns. Senior Nik Hansen had scoring runs of six and 26 yards, and rushed for 152 yards on 26 carries. Lane Barry added a 40-yard TD strike to Cameron Heggie. Heggie, the area’s top receiver with 20 catches, raked in five balls from Barry for 78 yards.
“Harpursville is a good team, and good teams make you make the type of mistakes we had,” Dayton said. “But we played hard the entire game, and we just need to get better. We have two more games to do that and the offseason.”

Walton 27, Bainbridge-Guilford 22
BAINBRIDGE – Once again, a B-G-Walton contest went to the wire.
The Bobcats, down three starters including their entire starting backfield, nearly rallied for the win Friday night holding Walton scoreless in the second half.
Cole Webb's 20-yard TD pass to Mike Carlin with 7:33 left in the fourth cut the Walton lead to five points. B-G failed to connect on the two-point conversion, but still had one more opportunity.
B-G's last drive of the game ended in a turnover of downs, though, as Walton squeaked by. "We were on Walton's side of the field three times in the second half, and just couldn't score," said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. "We made some adjustments in personnel at halftime, and our kids just seemed to come alive once they realized they could play with Walton. There was no quit in these kids."
Walton assumed a 27-16 halftime advantage scoring on a TD pass with four seconds left in the first half. That score proved pivotal – and the margin of victory.
Carlin, playing fullback for the first time in his career – and on less than three days of practice – ran for 105 yards to lead the B-G offense. Carlin scored on a 34-yard run in the first quarter, and Webb had a 30-yard TD keeper in the second quarter. Lucas Butcher added a 35-yard field goal.
Walton's Austin Kilmer scored three first-half TDs, but quarterback Blake Hitt's 24-yard TD throw to Kilmer – Walton's lone completion of the game – was the pivotal offensive play.
"We had to make some adjustments throughout the game and had all kinds of personnel in new positions, but we absolutely had a chance in this game," Mattingly said. "We had a good game plan, and we really battled."

Unatego 45, Unadilla Valley 19
NEW BERLIN – Unatego made the most of its few touches in Friday's victory over Unadilla Valley.
The Spartans, headed to the Class D playoffs, ran just 19 plays on offense, but scored on four of them. Unatego also had two fumble returns for a touchdown and a kickoff return. All told, the visiting club had four touchdowns covering 75 yards or more, yet UV coach Mark Segina felt the final score was a little misleading. "I don't think (the score really reflects how well we played," Segina said.
After a series of games where it averaged less than 100 yards of total offense per game, the Storm had their best rushing performance of the season, led by junior fullback Alex Avolio. Avolio ran for 160 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Dillon Rifanburg sandwiched a TD run between Avolio's two TD jaunts as UV finished with a season-best 214 rushing yards.
"Honestly, we had the ball most of the game, and when they had the ball, they scored quickly to take us out of the hunt," Segina said.
Unatego scored quickly after UV turned the ball over in the first quart. Josh Feyerabend had TD tosses of 81 yards to Tanner Winchester and 75 yards to Kellen Komenda to open a 12-0 first-quarter lead. Two fumble return scores padded the lead to 26-0 at halftime, and Komenda returned the kickoff to start the third quarter 80 yards to paydirt.
"Even though we lost, we felt we improved and we're excited that we accomplished some things on offense," Segina said.
