Unbeaten Trojans advance to Section IV semifinals

Greene 3, Watkins Glen 0
GREENE – Greene had little to no advance information on Friday’s opponent, Watkins Glen. Prior lack of knowledge mattered little as the Trojans extended their unbeaten record to 18-0, and advanced to the Section IV Class C semifinals.
“We went in kind of blind, but we knew they would be a physical opponent,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “We’re known as a finesse team, but I was proud of the way we stepped up physically. We had both elements (finesse and physical play).”
The Trojans defense was sparked by stopper Brian Leone, who in his third game back from injury was finally at 100 percent, Tallman said. On the offensive side, Kurt Bartholomew and Luke Day accounted for all three Greene goals.
Bartholomew scored during a scrum in front of the Watkins Glen goal approximately 13 minutes into the game. The second tally was much more picturesque, Tallman said. Bartholomew sent a through pass, and Day split the defense on his run to take the ball and beat the Senecas’ keeper. Bartholomew added an insurance goal in the second half.
Greene hosts Marathon Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. In the only meeting between these two schools in Tallman’s tenure, Marathon beat Greene in the Section IV finals. “They live, breathe, and die soccer over there,” Tallman said, himself a 1991 Marathon graduate. “They always have a quality team, and Chip Stewart is a great coach.”

Elmira Notre Dame 2, Greene 1 (OT)
ELMIRA – Greene’s old nemesis, Elmira Notre Dame, needed overtime to outlast the Trojans in Class C sectional play Friday.
The Crusaders’ Allegra Dawes recovered a loose ball after Greene goalie Lindsey Brown had made an initial save on a direct kick, and Dawes was able to score the winner with 2:08 left in the second overtime.
“It was a great game. They outshot us, had lots of cornerkicks, and put more pressure on our defense in the second half; however, defensively, we did job of limiting any great shots,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “Lindsey played well for us in goal, and we had a few opportunities to score throughout the game.”
Greene’s all-time leading scorer, Paige Wilcox, scored in her typical fashion. She gathered a ball well outside the 18-yard box, beat several defenders before scoring the game’s opening goal 25:08 into the opening half. Just about 7 1/2 minutes later, END scored the equalizer. After a Brown save, Emma Booth picked up a loose ball and tied the game from close range.
It was a great game. They outshot us, had lots of corner kicks, and put more pressure on our defense in the second half, however defensively we did a good job to limit any great shots and Lindsey Brown played well in goal. We also had a few opportunities to score throughout the game.
Greene was down to just one bench sub after an early-game injury, but retained its aggressiveness and hustle, Stone said. “I couldn’t have asked any more out of my players,” Stone said. “Each one played well, and they played Elmira tough.”
Greene finishes with a 9-6-1 record.

“It was a solid first half and we played with them,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis. “The second half just got away from us. They took advantage of every opportunity and just outplayed us, but we never gave up.”
S-E senior Kayla Belush was charged with marking 2014 Division I soccer recruit Hannah Shankman, and held Shankman in check into a goal midway through the second half.
